Two metro transit passengers had an argument last night that turned into violence after they exited the bus.
Police were called to the intersection of University Avenue and Simpson Street in St. Paul to aid a man who was injured. Witnesses reported that they had seen a younger man repeatedly kick this man in the head. The victim was taken to Regions hospital. His name has not been released.
Police arrested suspect Brian Edward Harper, 19, who was found hiding in a garage about a block away.
Concern over metro transit safety has been on the rise since 2007 when there were three fatal attacks and one non-fatal shooting, all within six weeks.
On February 27, two boys were shot on the bus, but they recovered.
On April 9, a fifteen year-old boy boarded a bus on 7th and Nicollet. He was attacked by nine men, six of whom are confirmed gang members. He was dragged from the bus, robbed and beaten until he was able to escape.
After the rash of violence in 2007, the police chief for metro transit, Dave Indrehus said, "I'm not minimizing how serious this is, but I guess my perspective has to be that we provided 74 million rides last year with only a few minor incidents. We've got a safe system."
No statements have been issued by metro transit recently.
