Hit-country music artist Tim McGraw made his big screen acting debut as a troubled parent in the film adaptation of “Friday Night Lights,” so when he was asked to play another dad in a football film, Tim McGraw was a little reluctant.
However, when McGraw read the script for the film, “The Blind Side,” Tim had a different outlook and accepted to act in the film. Although “The Blind Side” and “Friday Night Lights” are both sports stories adapted from books, McGraw would have vastly different performance roles this time around.
Tim McGraw plays the character of Sean Tuohy, who is a mellow suburbanite whose charismatic wife, played by Sandra Bullock, dominates the family. It’s a far cry from his dark portrayal in “Lights,” where he proved his acting chops by playing a menacing alcoholic.
The new film is based on the book written by Michael Lewis. The book tells the true story of Michael Oher, the football star who was abandoned by his birth parents and grew up in foster care in the housing projects of Memphis. Oher, who is now in his rookie season with the Baltimore Ravens, was mentored out of the projects and onto the gridiron by a wealthy couple, which is portrayed by Tim McGraw and Sandra Bullock. The family takes Oher in, and help him athletically and academically, goading him to raise his grades to earn a scholarship to the University of Mississippi.
The amazing true story portrayed in "The Blind Side" hit theaters this weekend, up against the teen "Twilight" phenomenon, "New Moon." "The Blind Side" came in second to "New Moon," with an opening weekend box office result of $34,119,372. Tim McGraw's flick may have snatched the second spot for the weekend, but "The Blind Side" posted a strong estimated $10.9 million on approximately 4,100 screens at 3,110 sites, ranking as the highest-grossing opening day ever for a sports drama.
