Grammy-winning country artist Steve Wariner recently traveled to Rose Barracks Army Post in Vilseck, Germany, to perform for American troops who recently returned from serving in Iraq.
Taking time out from promoting his newest CD, which is a musical tribute to his friend and mentor Chet Atkins, Wariner toured the installation with Lt. Col. Bryan Denny, commander of the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment.
During visit, Indiana native Wariner met soldiers, viewed action on the mortar range and visited with soldiers in the Wounded Transition Unit, where he recognized a soldier he had seen before.
The soldier reminded Wariner that they'd first met in February 2008 when the artist performed for wounded soldiers in Washington, D.C., while the young sergeant was recuperating at the hospital at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Accompanying himself acoustically on guitar, Wariner performed a solo concert for members of the 2nd Cavalry and the Wolfpack Mortar Squad. Following his performance, he gave the black Takamine guitar he had played to the soldiers.
