The popular TV-talent show for country crooners who come in pairs, Can You Duet, will return for a second season, and that said, they’re looking for some top-notch duo talent.
The CMT-broadcast show, which earned the highest-rated series premiere ever for the country audience-targeted network, will conduct an open call audition on
Saturday, March 7, for thousands of country star hopefuls at the
Wildhorse Saloon, 120 2nd Ave., in Nashville.
SLATED TO BEGIN airing its second season this summer, the weekly series is designed to find America’s next great country music duo. Unlike other talent competition shows, each contestant will compete as part of a duo. As a result, viewers witness, first-hand, all the on- and off-stage drama that comes with creating a dynamic musical duet.
Can You Duet judge, Naomi Judd.
In addition to critiquing each performance and deciding who will advance to the next round, the show’s yet-to-be announced panel of judges, usually a mix of vocal coaches, established artists and industry insiders, also serve as mentors to guide, groom and develop the duets along the way. (During the debut season,
Naomi Judd was an especially nurturing but down-home honest judge, for those who missed the hit show’s first go ‘round.)
SEVERAL CAN YOU DUET veterans from the first season already have made great strides in their respective careers, including final winners
Caitlin & Will, who were paired together during the program—separated from their original duo partners—and ultimately signed to Sony Music Nashville’s Columbia Records. The pair’s debut single
“Even Now,” is set for radio release at the close of March.
Third-place runner-ups, a husband-and-wife team known as
Joey + Rory, not only landed a recording contract with
Sugar Hill Records, but their debut CD, the dozen-track
Life of A Song, recently cracked the Top 30 on the country charts. Plus, they also landed the plum job of serving as the national spokespeople for
Overstock.com.

Caitlin & Will release their first single March 31, 2009.
Most recently, however, they garnered a 2009 Academy of Country Music nomination for
Duo of the Year, up against
Brooks & Dunn, Sugarland, Montgomery Gentry and
Big & Rich for the prize.
Rory Feek, one-half the rocketing pair, was already a hit songwriter in Nashville, but now, with the ACM nod in his pocket, the thought of being considered for such an honor is “just crazy,” he shared.
Meanwhile,
Can You Duet’s fourth-place runner-ups in season one,
Kate & Kacey, possibly remembered by viewers as The Coppolas on the show, have signed with
Big Machine Records, also the label home of hot-ticket starlet
Taylor Swift, The blond sisters currently are touring with
Little Big Town on that group’s upcoming West Coast tour.
THESE SUCCESSES DULY noted, Can You Duet has shown itself to be more than just a ratings-getter among TV-watching country fans, but also a viable vehicle for aspiring country artists. Those interested in giving it a go in Nashville come March 7 need to get crackin’ to get their paperwork in order.
