Dailey & Vincent debut at No. 1 on Billboard's bluegrass charts with sophomore CD

The bluegrass duo's CD debuts at No.1 on Billboard.

Award-winning Rounder Records duo Dailey & Vincent debuted at No. 1 this week on Billboard's Top Bluegrass Albums chart with their second release, Brothers From Different Mothers.

Like quicksilver, the pair--Darrin Vincent and Jamie Dailey--became one of this writer's favorite newcomers upon first  listen of their stunningly pure harmonies that haven't been heard since the brotherly sweetness of country-gospel's The Louvin Brothers.

Local country audiences got a good does of the pair when WSM personality Eddie Stubbs made them the focus of one of his Feb. 9, 2009, Intimate Evening live broadcast, where he couldn't praise the duo's sound enough.

Then, just last month, Dailey & Vincent had the record release party for their new effort in Music City. It was a night to remember, and even the recent two-time Grammy nominee Charlie Louvin turned out, as did cousins Wil and Langdon Reid of Grandstaff (who also happen to be the music-making sons of The Statler Brothers' Harold and Lou Reid, respectively).

Meanwhile, Dailey & Vincent are here, there and yonder working to support the new Brothers From Different Mothers CD. Coming up, Sirius XM will air a "track-by-track" show, with Jamie and Darrin talking with Kyle Cantrell about each song on the album, on Bluegrass Junction (Sirius 65, XM 14). This particular show premiered on April 15, but will re-air at 8 p.m. Central/9 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, April 21.

The cut-by-cut approach should be quite insightful for those interested in stories behind the songs and the writers who create them. This scribe, for one, has a lifelong love affair with the music of country's Statlers, so it's especially appealing for this pair of ears to take in a bluegrass-flavored rendition of The Statler Brothers' "Years Ago." (I must admit, I still listen to it daily--and it's been a trio of weeks at least since I snagged my copy of the CD.)

Speaking of the Statlers, Brothers From Different Mothers also closes out its dozen-track list with "On the Other Side," a moving and thought-provoking song penned by Jimmy Fortune, former tenor for The Statlers. This tune, performed by Darrin and Jamie, is timeless. And of course, while every tune is a keeper on this disc (hence, the strong debut showing on the charts), the Gillian Welch-penned "Winter's Come and Gone," also is a current favorite of this music fan, thanks to the on-the-money delivery and nectar-fine harmonies of D&V.

But hey, don't take this inksmith's word for it; listen for yourself. And for those heading to the upcoming MerleFest, watch for Dailey & Vincent to make their debut at that songwriting showcase on Thursday, April 23.

Live performance by Dailey & Vincent, with an enthusiastic crowd, to say the least.
