Those who attend the "Shoot for a Cure" exhibition/competition Sept. 2 in nearby Murfreesboro are likely to not only help a great cause, but also spy a country-music celeb here and there.
The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association and World Champion Mounted Shooter “Outlaw Annie” are said to be key players behind the forthcoming shoot to benefit the Susan G. Komen Greater Nashville organization.
Open to the public, the contest will feature some of the nation’s top riders competing alongside country music celebrities. The evening also will include performances and a live auction featuring one-of-a-kind items.
Among the country-music celebs rumored to be taking part are Storme Warren, host of GAC’s Headline Country; Nashville Star competitor Jason Meadows, a rodeo-ridin' cowboy-turned-country artist; and Brett Warren (of the Warren Brothers), to name but three. Plus, Brody Beaver, a champion in the 2009 National High School Finals Rodeo contest, along with some 100-plus other shooters, will participate, as will "Blue Jeans," the equine star of Hannah Montana the Movie, and the horse's local owner, Bobby Brooks of Franklin.
As for mounted shooting, it's reportedly the fastest-growing equestrian sport in the world. Competitors in Wednesday's "Shoot for a Cure" will ride horseback through a ribbon-shaped course --paying homage to the breast-cancer awareness logo--while firing single-action ‘45s loaded with black powder blank ammo at pink balloons. When all is said and done, the rider with the fastest time will receive a custom belt buckle from Montana Silversmiths and a S.A. Colt 45.
Organizers report that the charity-themed ride, with host Annie Bianco Ellett, will serve as the kick-off event for this year's CMSA Eastern Championships at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum, 304B West Thompson Lane, in Murfreesboro. Ellett is national spokeswoman for the CMSA and credited with revolutionizing the sport.
Moreover, Ellett is the first and only woman in mounted shooting to win a world title overall, and as such, she Annie travels the country competing and offering shooting seminars. "Outlaw Annie’s" shooting and riding skills have been featured on ESPN, Outdoor Life Network, TNN and Fox Sports Television; plus, she's the official shooting instructor in CMT’s hit-reality show dubbed Cowboy U.
As for "Shoot for a Cure," country fans' chance to spy a celeb of the genre gets under way at 6 p.m. Sept. 2 at t he coliseum, with doors opening at 5 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for students, with children under 10 admitted free. And remember, all proceeds will be donated to the local Susan G. Komen chapter.
