The idea came from Rochester, NY, but the goal is for everyone.
The object, according to Mike Morone who created this special event, is to "magically shift ownership of all this stuff, in one weekend all over the U.S. with no effort and at no cost." The stuff he refers to are the things that people no longer have a use for, but would be of value to another person. He thinks that this event, scheduled for May 15, 2010, could result in the shrinking of landfills, a boost to the economy and, hopefully, a reduction in the amount of garbage generated by consumers in general. It could also help millions of people in need.
The plan is simple: On May 15, bring items like bicycles, sports equipment, household items, tools, building materials, furniture, books, clothing and other valuables to your curbs for others to take for free -excluding things like food, drugs, weapons or chemicals. Morone is hoping that Give Your Stuff Away Day will become a fun and social grass-roots movement and would like to keep it "citizen-based, and let the government solve bigger problems."
So start looking through your homes for stuff you think someone else could use and get ready for Give Your Stuff Away Day on May 15, and enjoy an uncluttered home and a clearer conscience.
