Tips to help you save money at the grocery store

The retail stores would like for all of us to spend more money than we need to each time we visit. Here are some tips to help you save instead of spend at the grocery store:

You know when a sale sign will read, "2 for $5.00"? That does NOT mean you have to buy two items. You can buy just the one, since that is probably all that you need, for $2.50. So, put the extra item back on the shelf and save yourself $2.50!

As always, coupons are encouraged. However, if you have a coupon that says, "$1.00 off 3", chances are you do not need 3. So, a suggestion to you is: buy only 1 and buy the store brand.

Stick to your grocery list. Unless you see a great sale on an item you regularly use and have a coupon for it, just walk on by.

Get in and get out. The longer you stroll around the store, the more items you will just, "have to have". Do not dilly dally, just get what is on your list and go home. The retail stores have learned that the longer shoppers remain in the store the more they will buy. This is why you are starting to see colored walls, carpeting and comfy chairs placed throughout the stores now. Think about the fast food restaurants. They generally paint their walls bright colors and have crazy music playing. That is because they want you in and out to make room for more customers!

Look beyond the displays at the entrance of the store. These are generally the most expensive items!

If you only need 3 to 5 items, opt for the carry cart. Use the smallest cart possible for what you need and you will be less likely to buy more. The same concept applies to dinner plates. The smaller the plate you use, the less you will eat!

Pay attention to these tips and you will spend less the next time you are grocery shopping. Stay away from the comfy chairs, big shopping carts, displays with high priced goods and silly coupons. Stick to your list and only buy what you need. Get in and get out and you will keep more money in your bank account.

Those sale signs that read "Buy 2 for X" are usually split by item, but not always. Some stores, like Walgreens, do require that you buy the item in multiples to score the discount. So read the store's sale policies online before heading out, or ask a cashier before you ring up!

It is also important to know your prices this way you know when you are getting a good deal.

I worked in a grocery store for a while and the "essentials" are mostly located on the perimeter of the store. This is where the freshest and most shopped for items are. However, they will sometimes place necessary items (ice, eggs, butter) in a center aisle so you will do more aisle shopping.

The "buy 2 for X" works at Giant Eagle, a chain in the Ohio/PA area and elsewhere. I love the tip to use a carry cart or basket. Believe me, you limit what you need so you don't have to lug it around!
