What is a cookie? According to Wikipedia it is: A small, flat, baked treat containing milk, flour, eggs and sugar, in the US and Canada.
Cookies may have been created by acident back in the 7th century. The first record of cookies being baked dates back when they were used as test cakes. A small amount of batter was baked in order to test oven temperature.
In Italy, a famous type of cookie is called, "biscotti". Biscotti means: twice baked. If you made biscotti you would see that this type of cookies is baked twice!
The first version of cookies were made using honey as a sweetener. Way back in the day, they did not use sugar like we do today.
Basically, cookies are: single sized cakes and are great for snacking. There are several types of cookies you can make. Here are a few varieties: drop, pressed, bar, molded, rolled, no bake and refrigerated.
There have been thousands of cookie recipes created over the years.
A question for the ages is: "What is the difference between a cookie and a biscuit?" In the US, biscuits are a variation of quick breads that tend to be more savory than sweet. In the US, cookies are just as I have explained above, a sweet individual sized snack treat. In the United Kingdom, a cookie is basically a sweet snack treat that consists of chocolate chips and other sweet additives. Over there a biscuit is a cookie such as shortbread that is plain with no additives such as candies or chips added in.
