Approximately three hundred people attended last night’s Art@Axis event at the Axis building in downtown San Jose. The event was the kick-off to San Jose’s Downtown Open House tour, which runs through this weekend (September 26-27). More than eighty separate works by over twenty artists from the Bay Area decorate Axis’s lobby, twelfth-floor units and the penthouse, which occupies part of the twenty-first floor and commands dramatic views of downtown San Jose, the Diablo range to the east, the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south and west, and Moffett Field to the north.
Curator Deborah Mills Thackrey, a fine art and graphic photographer, arranged the show with the combined efforts of Axis and the members of Silicon Valley Artists Collaborative as a way to publicize the art community in the South Bay. “Silicon Valley’s emphasis on high tech tends to overwhelm and ignore the creative arts, as does having to live in the shadow of San Francisco’s notoriety as an arts mecca,” said Thackrey. “While the reputation of the local arts scene has suffered, the quantity and quality of artists is very good.
The art hanging on the elegant walls of the Axis building is offered for sale. “This is a great way to decorate that new condo!” said Thackrey. The art includes oil paintings, photography, glass sculptures, wood sculptures, textiles, mixed media works, and digital art.
Among the local artists whose work can be viewed at Axis are Lisa Amato, Jenifer Bacon, Laura Callin Bennett, Ellen Brook, Manli Chao, Della Calfee, Syd Dunton, Kathleen Elliot, Stefani Esta, Luis Gutierrez, Clark Gussin, Faye Kala, Carol Koffel, Lori Krein, Alyssa Lichtenstein, Lucy Liew, Donna Orme, Nancy Rice, Deborah Mills Thackrey, Tom Thackrey, Inna Razmakhova, Nadia Vinogradova, Tim Ryan, Donald Bruce Wright.
The paintings, photographs and sculptures will be on display at the Axis building throughout the following week, including the Downtown Open House tour.
Axis is located at 38 N. Almaden Blvd. at W. Santa Clara, behind the historic Hotel De Anza, San Jose, CA 95110. For more information, visit Art@Axis’s website.

I liked the "wearable art" aspect of the Axis event. Six women walked through the exhibit wearing designs by Alyssa Lichtenstein.
