Seeing "multiples" at the David Shelton Gallery

In his inaugural address, David Shelton, owner of the newly founded David Shelton Gallery, has presented to the city of San Antonio an exhibition titled Multiples, which will be on view through Aug. 25, 2009. Featured in the gallery's first exhibition are artists working in a wide range of styles and mediums to include photography, painting, installation, ceramics, and drawing.

Within the aptly titled exhibition, the David Shelton Gallery has collaborated with several artists to create multiple works, with each artist's body of work being either an edition created multiple times to exact specifications, or multiple pieces that are cohesive in style, subject matter, and overall composition. The featured artists include Kimberly Aubuchon, Holly Hein Brooks and Bryson Brooks, Alejandro Diaz, Joey Fauerso, Frank Hein, Diana Kersey, Scott Lifshutz, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Jung Hee Mun, Cruz Ortiz, Chuck Ramirez, Leslie Raymond, Daniel Saldana, Al Souza, Dan Sutherland and Michael Velliquette

As the David Shelton Gallery has opened it's doors to work from up and coming artists, and established artists alike, the gesture seems to have been returned tenfold. Multiples delivers to the viewer a body of work united by craftsmanship, that delves into the distinctly modern while maintaining direct ties to the classical. As the viewer moves from one piece to the next, each body of work successfully adds to the exhibition a new dimension rooted in the individual artist's distinct sense of style. Shortly thereafter, this plethora of individuality proceeds to collide into an interesting, and well thought out exhibition.

In his piece titled Shelf Field, Dan Sutherland presents to the viewer the opportunity to look beyond the surface of the picture plain. In a piece that is seemingly simplistic, veiled are the true complexities of the drawing which occupy the space behind a blurred surface. Upon further investigation, the degree of detail and soft-handed craftsmanship reveals a truly masterful depiction of a scene that is strangely mysterious and soothing, while simultaneously unnerving.

One can only hope to see a continuation of such exhibitions as has been presented by the David Shelton Gallery with Multiples.
