Confessions of a Wii Fit fanatic: Strength training

Wii Fit: Strength Training
This is part of a series about the Wii.

Ever have one of those weeks/months/years that tests your will and strength?

I’d expected more from 2009, but so far it’s been a real test of endurance. Suffice it to say that I haven’t looked for additional ways to challenge my strength. So as addicted as I’ve become to the Wii Fit (see below for more information about the Wii Fit), I’ve steered clear of the strength training exercises.

But since I tend to resist what I need most, I finally succumbed two nights ago. Unlike the comparatively frolicsome fun of the other training modes, strength training is all business.

The strength training mode immediately offers the following five exercises to build and tone your muscles:
  • Single-Leg Extension – helps build triceps, torso and hip muscles and improves coordination
  • Push-up and Side Plank – helps tone chest, shoulder, and arm muscles
  • Torso Twists – works to tone side abdominal muscles
  • Jackknife (not as scary as it sounds) – works to tone abs
  • Lunge – helps strengthen and tone thighs and hips
As with the other modes, more exercises become available as one puts in more time, as do the opportunity for more repetitions,. Users also get feedback and tips as they go along, and competitive sorts are rewarded by receiving scores at the end. Admittedly, for some of the exercises, it can be a little tricky to both focus on the exercise at hand and the television screen.

And though I’ve resisted additional tests of strength, they can be rewarding if you actually feel the fruits of one’s efforts. After just two days of doing exercises in this mode, I am already starting to feel the difference.

*An overview of Wii Fit: According to Nintendo, it “combines fun and fitness in one product. It can change how you exercise, how you balance, and even how you move.” The product comes with a Wii balance board accessory, which is wireless and runs on batteries. The software offers exercises and activities in four training modes: Strength Training, Yoga, Balance Games, and Aerobics.
