TeleNav announces a great new version of their TeleNav GPS Navigator for mobile phones

TeleNav today announced TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.0. This looks like a significant upgrade to the already popular and feature rich GPS application for many mobile phones.

Among the upgrades several stand out as major improvements:

  • One touch speech recognition. This allows the user to press one button and then while speaking normally state a destination address. Additionally this feature will allow searching for a specific business or even to bring up a map of a specific area. The major benefit to all this functionality is that it reduces the amount time a driver would have to look away from the road to operate their GPS
  • Lane assist. How many times have you found yourself in the wrong lane for the upcoming turn you have to make? Lane assist can be a big help on major roads and busy intersections as it indicates the proper lane the driver needs to be in based on the directions the GPS is following.
  • Red Light Camera Alert. Like it or not red light cameras are a huge revenue maker for localities and their numbers are growing. This function will give the user an audible alert before reaching a red light camera equipped intersection.
  • Freeway speed limit information. Speed limit information will be displayed and a visual warning is triggered when the speed limit is exceeded.
  • Local Apps. This allows for the searching of movie information, weather as well as local commuter alerts.

Possibly the biggest improvement of all is a new technology that allows the GPS to continue to function and provide directions even if wireless service is lost. When a route is requested the GPS Navigator downloads the entire route as well as surrounding areas to the mobile phone. Should wireless service be lost there is no interruption of the routing even if a series of wrong turns have been made. Once the user reacquires wireless service everything reverts back to full service and they can get new directions as well as real-time alerts such as traffic.

Telenav also stated, in their press release today, that many of the new features included in this update are based on feature requests made by users.

The new version of Telenav's service will be available March 24 on select mobile devices.
