Gift card vendor waiting for final decision from Fortunoff
A leading e-commerce vendor is weighing its responsibility to consumers who purchased Fortunoff gift cards from its site. Crystal Melby, a spokesperson for GiftCertificates.com, said the company would make a decision once other options to redeem existing cards are exhausted.
"While Fortunoff is currently not accepting gift cards, their owner states that it is working with creditors to find a way to resume accepting the cards. GiftCertificates.com will assess once the Fortunoff owners make a final decision," Melby said.
GiftCertificates.com offers consumers the option to purchase gift cards from more than 200 merchant partners on its site. Melby said the firm was "saddened to hear" of Fortunoff's struggles, adding, "Tough economic times are definitely having an impact on all."
Fortunoff, a New York-based luxury goods store, filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in 12 months earlier this month. It abruptly stopped honoring both gift cards and store credits Feb. 17.
A Fortunoff spokesperson said customers who are holding gift cards are simply creditors of the retail chain and will have to line up with the businesses the firm also owes money to receive compensation. However, there is a chance consumers will be able to use the cards in the future if the retailer finds a new buyer or by order of the bankruptcy court.

That is unfortunate. This further illustrates why it is important for consumers to use gift cards sooner rather than later. If you have a gift card you don't want, you can sell it for cash or exchange it at GiftCardRescue
