Wii owners who happen to enjoy playing, you know, real video games on their Nintendo consoles have been feeling increasingly ignored lately. E3 2008 was a stinging slap in the face as far as most hardcore Nintendo fans are concerned, and while this year’s E3 presentation has gone a long way toward restoring optimism about the future of real gaming on the Wii, it can still feel difficult to find polished, substantive titles coming out in the near future for Nintendo’s home console.
Enter Samus Aran, as gaming’s ultimate leading lady is set to make a return to the Wii in late August. Austin developer Retro Studios is set to release Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii on August 24. Granted, Trilogy is a compilation of three games many of us have played before, but getting Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption all on one disc for only $49.99 is an offer Wii owners shouldn’t pass up.
As compensation for the recycled content, Trilogy adds some enticing improvements to the first two Prime titles. Both the original Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes have been reworked to include the Wii Remote motion controls featured in Prime 3, as well as widescreen presentation. Of course, there are those who prefer the classic control scheme of the Gamecube titles to Corruption’s motion controls, but if nothing else Metroid Prime Trilogy offers a new way to experience Samus’ first two 3D adventures.
While all-new Metroid content would be preferable, at least we know that it's on track for 2010 via Team Ninja and whatever craziness they have planned for Metroid: Other M. Until then, three excellent Metroid titles, including one of the best-reviewed games of all time, for the same price as Toy Story Mania isn’t a bad deal for Wii owners with a real action/adventure itch to scratch.
