National Review Nov 3 2008 issue
Yesterday, my November 3 issue of National Review arrived in the mail. It contains the most impressive argument against electing Barack Obama I have read so far.
Entitled "Obama's Core," this piece by Michael Knox Beran has nothing to do with Obama's birth certificate or his being a "secret Muslim" or any of those conspiracy theories.
Instead, Beran makes the inarguable case that Obama is wrong for America because the candidate is, to be charitable, ambiguous about the greatness of America and Western Civilization. Obama loves himself, his "story" (after all, he's already written not one but two memoirs at age 47!) more than his country. That is not usually part of any President's job description.
I'll quote a few paragraphs here. However, I'd urge you to purchase this issue at the newsstand (it is not available at NRO.com) and read "Obama's Core" and pass it along...
Beran writes, in part:
When Obama does speak of the value of American culture and the larger civilization of which it is a part, there is invariably a false note. As "long as I live," he said in Philadelphia in March, "I will never forget that in no other country on earth is my story even possible." The worthiness of the conviction is tempered by its narcissism; it is as though Pericles, in his funeral oration, offered as proof of the greatness of Athens the fact that it had made his own "story" possible.
Barack Obama is not the right leader to preside over this moment of crisis in the West, when the old civilization is dying in Europe and has lost its hold on the greater part of this country's ruling classes. John McCain is the better choice. His experience has given him a keener sense of history and of the world. Some people are skilled in talking about the defense of freedom and civilization; McCain has actually defended them. He is not so stirring an orator as the senator from Illinois. But he has only to walk into the room, and his presence sounds the theme.

If McCain were so keen, why would he have picked Sarah Palin for his VP? McCain is not the right person for this position. He is too old, has problems with his temper, has run a negative campaign, and appears to be wanting to continue on with many of the Bush policies. He will not help our country.
I happened to enjoy Obama's books. I found Obama to be humble, introspective, and an intelligent man.

He got $40K advance from publisher and he decided to spend/ spread the wealth to Bali.

Can't wait to buy that NR magazine. It sounds like Beran nailed Obama. Just watching Obama in his rallies gives me the creeps. He's so aloof and seems to think so highly of himself. Watching McCain at his rallies, on the other hand, gives the impression that he's quite comfortable with ordinary people. While Obama prefers to be separated from his fans, for whatever reason. His basketball player style finger pointing is also annoying. As is his often exaggerated African-American accent. He's hardly a common African-American, with his "world citizen" backgroun, etc.

Actually, I really like the part where he went back into a fire and saved men's lives. Oh and how he survived 5.5 years of torture, which is 5.4999999 years longer than either of you would last.

John McCain fighter jet was shot down in 1968 and he was prisoner in hanoi till 73.
At the same time Barack was entering elementary school in Jakarta Indonesia.
This period of 1966 to 1970 was called
THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY in indonesia in turmoil fighting communism.
So maybe everybody here does not realise this.
But actually Barack should not only appreciate John McCain but Barack have to thank John McCain.

Kathy, in response to your blog, I would like to bring to your attention that McCain wasn't the only solider that was shoot down, nor was he the only one tortured. He didn't sign or shall I say surrender out of soliderity to his fellow POW's who along with Mccain suffered two years of pain (not 5.5 as you stated). Furthermore it has been discovered that McCain was given speacial treatment because he was the son of the ranking officer. I am not say McCain is not a good man, I am just saying there is more to the story then what you tend to shed. McCain graduated at the lowest of his class in the navy and was considered a ***k-up, but because of his father and grand-father he graduated. It took him along time before he was cleared to fly, for he tended to do what he wanted to do instead of what he was told. I would consider researchign more before you promote. Just my opinion.
Obama's oratory skills are average at best. Not even in the same league with the true great speakers such as FDR and Reagan. Good article with I think the best argument so far. As well when your Nations enemies prefer a candidate over another you know which way to vote. I still think it will be a McCain landslide. If Obama didn't have all these weird characters in his past, he would be alot more acceptable to me. He is highly intelligent and a gifted politician. And yes, a little stuck on himself too. But are is not almost everyone in Washington DC?
