McCain gives hilarious, classy speech at Al Smith Dinner

Reuters.com

The Al Smith Memorial Dinner commemorates the first Catholic to run for President. The dinner serves as a formal-yet-funny bipartisan get together -- a way to let off steam and say "no hard feelings" (if only for a few hours) near the end of every election.

Last night, John McCain delivered a memorable, entertaining speech that will appeal to both Republicans and Democrats who haven't lost their sense of humor. Even Hilary is caught laughing her head off.

Whoever wrote this speech (and I'd love to learn who did) earned every penny last night, and frankly deserves a huge bonus.

Do listen in, for a wonderful way to end another cantankerous, depressing campaign week.

I promise you'll thank me later.

Polite people laugh their heads off, that's called classy. When have we witnessed McCain's being classy? When he called his wife a c^^t? Or while singing bomb bomb Karaoki or when he laughed/smiled at "the b*tch" comments at Townhalls?

THE GOP never claimed McCain was classy, it was they themselves that screamed from rooftops during the primaries what a low-class POS he is on a daily basis.

Classy men don't make excuses nor do they claim their pride in a John Birch running mate's inciting racists in public venues.

Yeah, Eric. there are LOTS of chocktaw indians who beling to the KKK. Try harder.

Augh: a 'racist' is a conservative winning an argument with a liberal.' Your talking points have been debunked or simply not relevant to grown ups -- what prey tell is wrong with bombing Iran should it deserve it.

We bombed the Japanese twice and even they don't seem that busted up about it. The worst we'd likely have to put up with after we nuked a strategic site or two in Iran would be what? Ten years of Muslim versions of Godzilla flicks? The Persian version of Hello Kitty? Maybe even, I dunno, a functioning secular democracy with a robust technological sector -- like Japan ended up with?

Check out anti-Palin (and by extension, anti-female and even anti-handicapped) obscenities making their way around and net and finding its way to YOUR public demonstrations and popular entertainment, then get back to me, m'kay?

I thought that JM was a very class act during this comedy performance. He doesn't come across as dirty, pathetic or mean. He had a lot of one line zingers and he delivered well. Who ever wrote this for him should write for some of the comedy personal on TV. They definitely need it.

    Thanks for posting this.

Here's GOP example of "class act"

Joe the Plumber .... as discussed by a GOP'er on FOX news, Conservative talking head Malzberg insisted ".... that even though the actual Joe Wurzelbacher would do far better under Obama's tax plans, the real point is that raising taxes on the wealthy to give relief to the middle class removes any incentive for people to get rich...."

Isn't that precious!!! . . . making rich people pay taxes would remove incentive to the red, white and blue Plebes to GET rich

I read the transcripts for McCain and Obama's speeches before watching their deliveries, and on paper I thought their speechwriters did a great job and the jokes were more or less equally funny.

But in the delivery, McCain made the most of his jokes and barbs with a great delivery, while it totally seemed like Obama was reading through the speech for the first time. When he laughed at his jokes, I could see him thinking, "Hey that one wasn't bad," whereas he rushed through the delivery of some of the better self-deprecating lines... Perhaps he didn't find them quite as funny?
