Glenn Beck boycott not as widespread as supporters claim

glenn beck boycot
Glenn Beck (credit: Miami Herald)

Yesterday, reports circulated here and elsewhere that twenty major sponsors had pulled their ads from Glenn Beck's program on FOX News.

(The boycott organizers are protesting Beck's description of President Barack Obama as "racist" on a "Fox & Friends" segment late last month.)

But according to blogger Ed Morrissey, reports of the boycott's success have been exaggerated.

Morrissey contacted three of the companies who'd reportedly joined the boycott as of yesterday: Wal-Mart, CVS and Best Buy.

A spokesman for Best Buy told Morrissey that they've never advertised on Glenn Beck's show to begin with. Neither had CVS.

Of the three companies, only Wal-Mart confirmed that they had indeed pulled their ads from the program.

Echoing my observations yesterday, Morrissey marveled at the tone deafness on display at Wal-Mart corporate headquarters, writing:

I have to say I’m puzzled by Wal-Mart’s acquiescence in this boycott.  It’s not Beck fans who picket their stores, demanding unionization and demonizing them for their employee compensation policies.  They’re appeasing the same people who want to drive them out of business.

It's racist to observe that someone may be a racist? So Beck saying that he thinks Obama is racist is somehow racist in itself and his career deserves to be ended?

What happened to free speech? Or we're allowed to say only nice things about Obama?

  • Douchebag 2 years ago

Of course it is racist to recognize someone else having a racist attitude. There are no exceptions to the rule, even if you are an ethnic minority you MAY NOT EVER recognize another ethnic minority who has a racist attitude. If you cannot abide by these rules and say nice things then YOU MUST be quiet and keep your opinion to yourself. ..................Just Kidding. :D

Advertisers pulling ads is not an attack on free speech. In this case it's a business choice.

Also I would think that Wal-Mart in this case would break from the norm and be more pro-Obama as far as health care reform goes. They already have thousands of "associates" on food stamps, Medicare, and in subsidized housing. Not having to pay for health care would be awesome for Wal-Mart.

This has nothing to do with Beck saying Obama may be a rascist. It has everything to do with Van Jones, President Obama's Green Czar/Special Advisor and co-founder of ColorOfChange.org. Mr. Jones has directed this boycott due to Beck starting to connect the dots to a lot of shady dealings he has been involved with prior to his current position and what his true intentions are by being the so called "Green" Czar. Like all things in Washington, things are not as they seem to be. This whole act is straight from Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals. Rule 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it and polarize it. Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. C'mon people....start thinking for yourselves and stop being pulled into these childish race baiting schemes, which is exactly what ColorOfChange.org has created here. Look at the bigger picture, because there is more to this story.

I don't see that Wal-Mart would suffer at all if they had stayed put on Beck's show. Most people that listen to the show are conservative and are going to shop there for their largely Chinese made goods regardless of how many Americans are thrown out of work. In the 50's and 60's conservatives railed against anyone who even wanted to talk with the Chinese let alone buy from them. They were Communists and therefore not to be trusted. Now the right has come full circle because there is money in it and money to be made off the backs of the poor bastards under the Communist heel. Any remorse at trashing our desire for the world to be free has been paid for by the Chinese to Wal-Mart shareholders and executives. We even fueled our economy with money borrowed from them. For all intents and purposes the Chinese people are our serfs as well as the Communist party's serfs.
I think the American right likes them because they are sworn enemies of worker's rights.

So they should stick with Bec

I just spoke with Wal-Mart customer relations. The woman I spoke with said Wal-Mart is stopping ALL advertising on commentary programs. They say they are not going to advertise on programs that may be polarizing. I asked if that meant they would stop advertising on NBC, CBS and ABC. The nice lady had no info on that. So, until I see Wal-Mart ads on Glenn Beck, I will vote/shop elsewhere.

I cannot help but get a chuckle from the people who trash Wal-Mart for buying and selling Chinese made goods. At the same time that Wal-Mart is denigrated for selling said goods by people who claim to be all about human-rights. If I follow that train of logic, then Wal-Mart would be okay for buying and selling goods from a country that is obviously not too keen on human-rights so long as they were unionized.

It is all so clear to me now. :D

Whole Foods is a bit expensive for me but I occasionally shop there on that rare occasion they have something I can't get elsewhere. They definitely are big on the organic, Fair Trade, haute cuisine, environmentally grown side of things so if that's where you're coming from then it is a great place to shop. I agree with you that we should shop there to encourage a better attitude toward what we eat and I am glad to see you appreciate the finer things in life.

    Re:Douchebag and Whole Foods?

Boycotts USUALLY won't help the situation. The trick is to size up the 'problem' and decide whether your own interests are better served by boycotting or leaving it alone. Wal-Mart is sizing up whether they will keep/increase their customer base by being associated with Beck's politics or keep/increase their customer base by taking what appears to be a moral stand. They're not leaving FOX, they're bailing on Beck. You can hear the boardroom bean counters buzz.

Spreading the word about healthier food with 275 stores trumps the CEO's opinion in my book. The whole chain is marketed towards concerns of social progressives. Most conservatives will not put their money where their mouth is based on a CEO's opinion. Some might until they check it out.

BTW - Whole foods has New York Strip steaks, Porterhouse, bacon, sausage, poultry, and top quality, too. Upscale customers regardless of political affiliation are their base so Pabst and Kraft won't fly.

What an interesting time in history we find ourselves. Advertisers, theoretically, having to do the job that editors and fact-checkers once held. Opinions, blatant or not, projected from a "news" station is irresponsible journalism. Making even the playing field is no excuse for baseless claims and ridiculous rhetoric. Just beacuse people agree doesn't make it fact...and I'm a little sick of the "truth."

"CVS Caremark Corp., the R.I.-based giant pharmacy chain started in Massachusetts, acknowledged yesterday it’s had enough of Beck, the center of much controversy in the past, including his contention at one point that the Obama administration was secretly planning to build concentration camps. “While advertising on Fox is part of our communication plan, we had not requested time on Glenn Beck’s show specifically,” CVS said in a statement. “We have instructed our advertising agency to inform Fox to ensure Glenn Beck’s program is not part of our advertising plan.”

@Davidfromcali The issue - for me - with Whole Foods is not for me to make a statement by not shopping there. The issue - again for me - is that I don't condone the CEO's position and I don't care to put any more money in his pocket by shopping in his store.

I've heard that otherwise progressive folks in NYC shop there due to the combination of price and quality, and bless' em.

I am a white person that is part of this boycott, and I strongly disagree with the idea this boycott is not widespread, in fact it is still growing. Just yesterday I wrote a letter to Verizon Wireless about their commercials on Glenn Beck's show, and indeed in ONE DAY I got confirmation that Verizon Wireless has REMOVED their commercials from Beck's show too. Indeed this boycott is one of the few TV boycotts that has caught on like wild fire, and for darn good reason too.

This guy is a nut spreading false and dangerous (lies) about our President And our Country. He has advocated "Bin-laden" NUKING AMERICA to "wake up" people, called Obama a racist, he seems to forget Obama is 1/2 WHITE- Claims the Health Care Reform Bills want to unplug senors to let them die, and on and on. This guy may get viewers but he is causing people to act just like the nuts that bring their shotguns to the Democrat's town hall meetings about Health Care. Glen Beck is a dangerous nut spreading lies.

THIS IS EXTREMELY UN-AMERICAN IN MY VIEW. It reminds me of somebody attempting mind control 101 to the laughter of many others, only it's too sad to laugh at for most of us. The ultra-conservative-whites are the ones that often seem to forget Obama is 1/2 white, end of story. That really makes a lot of sense (NOT), to say an American, such as Obama (shall we debate this again too?)HATES whites, while having a white father. It only goes to show how out of touch Mr. Beck is with reality. Glen came up with this crazy idea because of the so called Beer Submit- Ah, yeah, that sure proved a lot of hate for whites by our President (err... not really). An intense dislike of the behavior of police racial profiling seems much more likely.
