Al Gore thinks the Earth is actually hotter than the Sun

On November 12, 2009, former Vice-President and global warming activist Al Gore appeared as a guest on NBC’s Tonight Show. During the interview, Gore tried to sell his book, which touts the idea of geothermal energy, as an alternative to the use of fossil fuels. He also made the embarrassing claim that the earth’s core temperature is “several million degrees.”

What follows is an excerpt of the exchange between Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien and self-styled climate change expert Al Gore:

“O'BRIEN: Now, what about ... you talk in the book about geothermal energy...

AL GORE, NOBEL LAUREATE: Yeah, yeah.

O'BRIEN: ...and that is, as I understand it, using the heat that's generated from the core of the earth ...

GORE: Yeah.

O'BRIEN: ...to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?

GORE: It definitely is, and it's a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy - when they think about it at all - in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, 'cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot …”

Contrary to what Gore may believe, according to NASA, it is actually the sun which at its core, has a temperature of “several million degrees” (approximately 27,000,000 degrees F).

The earth on the other hand, is slightly cooler with an estimated temperature of about 9,000 degrees F.

One would think that someone who won a Nobel Prize, as well as an Academy Award for his work on so-called global warming would know at least as much as an eighth grade Earth Science student.

Luckily for Gore, the mainstream press remains loyal to the left and refuses to cover his ignorant claims, while continuing to push the decidedly unscientific theory of man-made global warming.

    9000 degrees Farenheit or Celsius?

Maybe the earth is that hot in those non-existent Congressional Districts that received all that stimulus money or in the 57th state visited by Obama.

Nice Gore-bashing piece. Although it would've been nice had you taken some time to discuss the potential of geothermal. I guess you'd rather focus on attacking Gore than supporting real energy solutions. Typical.

What kind of person would say the things he said...It has been commonly acknowleged by many if not most scientists that GW is another Bankster-run hoax intent on more regulations and more thievery.

We are living in an insane confused world that gives people like President Obama, and Al Gore a Noble prize, two people who have never done a damned thing to better the life of anyone. It's more of a statement on the people who awarded them the Noble prize than it is on Obama and Gore, who just kind of accepted the prizes with amusement. People need to examine just who it is that is leading them. By and large they are no-nothing fools and charlatans.

From the USGS: "The geothermal energy contained in the upper five kilometers of Earth's crust is said to be 40 million times greater than the energy contained in oil and gas reserves". Congrats to Gore who uses his stature to advance alternative energy. Anyone with half a brain knows Al Gore is not a scientist. I, as a scientist in geothermal energy development, can pardon Al for his misquote on the thermodynamics of the Earth's core. The author makes us believe he is an expert in planetary and solar physics and geothermal by quoting core temperatures he likely "researched" from Google. What he fails to mention is that geothermal energy is currently mined from the Earth at temperatures between 350 and 750 degrees fahrenheit, and sometimes as low as 160 degrees F, making the several million degree or 9000 degree claim moot. Too bad that those beholden to right-wing ideology will do or say anything to keep us in the dark ages.

The uneducated and poor, who's only book is the bible, buy into fear. The GOP relies on fear for votes. The GOP has found its base - the poor and uneducated bible belt. The GOP despises an educated populous... because they know an open mind resists fear tactics. So they lie to, and steal from, the base, while fattening the wallets of the mega-rich thru corporate loopholes and tax breaks... who they also coincidentally garner votes from. A brilliant formula - guaranteed votes from the bottom and guaranteed votes from the top. Evil beyond belief, but brilliant. So, someone comes along with an idea to cleanup a polluted planet while providing vast amounts of renewable energy, and eventually replace a multi-trillion $$ fossil-fuel burning, GOP-entrenched industry... How will the GOP react? Well, as in the above story, it's not about the advancement of science leading us back to greatness, it's about finding a way to misdirect the conversation to the base and retain the $tatu$ quo.

Dan, whatever might be the case for the GOP, the Democrat Party is hands down the party of kooks. At demonstrations on high taxes in California, a democrat "protestor" bit the finger off of a conservative. When Democrat gays were denied marriage, because Californians voted it down, they went berserk and defaced churches, physically attacked people, and acted so vile it shocked sensible people. On illegal immigration, the Democrat Party wants amnesty and chain migration, DESPITE the fact millions of long time taxpaying Americans are OUT OF WORK. Please don't lecture rational people about the GOP, it indeed HAS SOME KOOKS, The LEFTIST Democratic Party has by far the rest of the KOOKS and everyone can see it.

P.S. By the way Dan, the first thing President Obama made sure of, was that he paid back his greedy, corrupt as hell, Wall Street Masters to the tune of hundreds of billions, now over a trillion dollars of honest, hardworking taxpayers money. Trying to put the $$ motive on Republicans is totally duplicitous.

DAN- Sharing a technical background(engineering) I think most of us like your input on energy. However, the gist of this article,IMHO, is that Al Gore is just another hoaxter and scamster (propaganda mouthpiece) for the MoneyPower's Global Warming Ripoff. The republicans are owned by the Standard Oil Trust, which is basically another tool (front) for the MoneyPower(FiatMoney).

Dan ... I pity you ... maybe you should READ the bible, instead of criticizing it: we are commanded to be proper stewards of the earth, and to pay our taxes. We are to help the poor, and downtrodden, we are to forgive those who have sinned, and help them. Renewable energy benefits all but the corrupt rich, who are just as likely to be Democrats. Geothermal, wind, water solar: Jesus would approve greatly of these!
