Call for "Internment/Resettlement Specialists" is cause for alarm

The National Guard has been posting job listings all over the Internet (Monster.com and GoArmy.com) in an effort to fill a very specific position. This in and of itself would not be anything to think twice about, except for the very alarming job title - "Internment/Resettlement Specialist." The first part of the job description reads:

Internment/Resettlement (I/R) Specialists in the Army are primarily responsible for day-to-day operations in a military confinement/correctional facility or detention/internment facility. I/R Specialists provide rehabilitative, health, welfare, and security to U.S. military prisoners within a confinement or correctional facility; conduct inspections; prepare written reports; and coordinate activities of prisoners/internees and staff personnel.

Some of your duties as an Internment/Resettlement Specialist may include:
--Assist with the supervision and management of confinement and detention operations
--Provide external security to confinement/corrections facilities or detention/internment facilities
--Provide counseling and guidance to individual prisoners within a rehabilitative program
--Prepare or review reports and records of prisoners/internees and programs

Even more alarming is the fact that this call for people to become "Internment/Resettlement Specialists" follows an April 2009 release of a Department of Homeland Security report titled "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment."

The report suggests that the economic downturn, and the election of the first African American president presented the opportunity for radical right-wing groups to recruit new members. The report also states the DHS will be working with state and local partners in the months following the report to determine the levels of right-wing extremist activity in the U.S.

Who exactly qualifies as so-called radical right-wing extremists? Here is some of the actual text of the report to give you an idea:

The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.

Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to rightwing extremists. DHS/I&A is concerned that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities.

Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.

Scholars and experts disagree over poverty’s role in motivating violent radicalization or terrorist activity. High unemployment, however, has the potential to lead to alienation, thus increasing an individual’s susceptibility to extremist ideas. According to a 2007 study from the German Institute for Economic Research, there appears to be a strong association between a parent’s unemployment status and the formation of rightwing extremist beliefs in their children—specifically xenophobia and antidemocratic ideals.

So if you oppose firearms restrictions, are a returning veteran, reject the idea of big federal government, oppose abortion or lax immigration policies, or are currently unemployed, then you are now a target. Consider yourself warned, and once those "Internment/Resettlement" positions have been filled, you better be quiet and fall in line, or prepare for whatever the consequences may be for your "right-wing extremist" activities.

They renamed the 31 Echo Military Occupational Specialty from "Corrections Specialist," to emphasize its shift from working as guards in military prisons to guarding Enemy Prisoners of War overeas. It was also done to symbolize the massive overhauling of the 31E MOS after the Abu Ghraib scandal. This is in no way a new position, just a name-change for one that has existed for decades. Calm down.

I was told by a person who's unit is "Internment/Resettlement" that it was a new group set up and they were attempting to get military police to take the positions. He said it was about two years ago the units were formed. He said they are training in crowd control etc. They are expecting riots. His group doesn't directly train for internment. He did acknowledge the existence of camps.

So I take it the 'journalist' who posted this article contacted monster.com and goarmy.com (note the .com instead of .gov) to make sure that the job postings actually came from DOD authorized personnel, and not some tinfoil-wrapped nutjob? You might as well publish a story about what someone posts on craigslist. Further trying to connect this thin story to the DHS report that was retracted is also pretty irresponsible. This story is a case study in the problem with citizen 'journalism'. I wish it wasn't necessary, but if the MSM isn't going to dig, we have to do it ourselves. That doesn't give us a licence to make the same mistakes they do, or to write with the same level of bias. Sworn US soldiers won't violate the Constitution by interning fellow citizens.
