John Conyers (D-MI) chuckles at the thought of doing his job

Speaking of the ObamaCare legislation, John Conyers, Democrat Senator of the most depressed state in the union, chuckled about the notion of reading a bill, saying, "What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?" Interestingly enough, it was Conyers' own supposed ability to understand the law that made him a viable candidate for Congress to begin with. His resume indicates that he might be up for the job:

Having entered the House of Representatives in 1964, Mr. Conyers is the second most senior member in the House of Representatives. After serving as Chairman of the House Committee on Government Operations (now renamed Government Reform) from 1989 until 1994, Congressman Conyers was elected by his congressional colleagues to lead, as Chairman, the pivotal House Committee on the Judiciary.

In addition to its oversight of the Department of Justice (including the FBI) and the Federal Courts, the Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over copyright, civil rights, consumer protection, and constitutional issues. Congressman Conyers was also a member of CBC at Capitol Steps of the Judiciary Committee in its 1974 hearings on the Watergate impeachment scandal and played a prominent role in the recent impeachment process, giving him the distinction as the only Judiciary Committee Member to have served on both panels.

So it seems like it shouldn't be too much to ask of a brilliant legal mind like Conyers. But if Conyers is right, and even someone with his ability to finagle the meaning of laws can't comprehend what he's reading, then shouldn't we maybe consider making our bills less complex?

I can't believe the arrogance to be so comfortable in admitting to the public that he isn't inclined to read what he signs off on because it requires too much effort!! Democrats REALLY need to take a breath from the power frenzy they are on, and consider consequences of their actions (if that word even exists in their vocabulary anymore). If there were EVER a reason to reject this bill as a paying citizen....

Maybe that's why ALL the Republicans are voting against it? THEY'VE READ IT!!!

Some Democrats have read it as well, They're voting AGAINST IT TOO!!!

The Pelosian Kool-Aid addicts have been swayed by her control of the "force" ("You don't need to read the bill, just vote for it. And these aren't the droids you're looking for..."), albeit the Dark Side.

This is an individual who has been in congress since 1964, if this is any indication of his entire congressional career (and i think it is)his constituents have had a lot of experience with (TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION) MATTHEW, FIRED IS NOT THE WORD FOR THIS MAN, HE APPEARS TO HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH RAPING THE PUBLIC, the "head" of the Judiciary ought to be in jail. How people let this kind of misrepresentation continue is beyond my grasp, get rid of the crook.

Conyers et al, her is what you swore to do: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

If you don’t read the bills you are voting for, how can you defend your oath? If it’s too difficult to read, don’t vote for it. No one said supporting and defending the Constitution would be easy!

Maybe Rep Conyers’ wife Monica found the Ethics rules too cumbersome to read as well.

Scott... Mr. Conyers is not a Senator, he is a member of the House of Representatives representing the 14th district of Michigan.

Regardless, he should be drawn and quartered along with the rest of his ilk!

I am a registered Democrat, but proud to say I did not vote for Obama, and I am ready to drop my party affiliation entirely! This is typical, it's a tragedy and it's an outrage! All legislators Democrats and Republicans alike, that cannot be bothered to read a bill should be recalled or impeached! The sole reason for them to be in office is to pass laws that represent the wishes of their constituents, if they can't be bothered to read and understand what's in a bill they should be removed from office! To all you legislators that may read this; Wake up you arrogant fools! What do you need to get the message? Do We The People need to march on DC with pitchforks! Start doing your jobs and represent the American voters, not the unions, not the illegal aliens and not all the corrupt special interest lobbyists you keep taking money from! Obama is such a disappointment, and the Democrats, who I no longer want to be associated with, are simply the worst people alive.

Right on! This is why the Tea Parties keep growing! What we are seeing is modern day "taxation without representation"; If they don't read the bills how can they know what they are voting on represents the best interests of the people they are supposed to be representing? They are so out of touch the should all be thrown out of office! People should vote out all incumbent democrats before they completely destroy our country! Dare I say... I almost with that fool Bush was back in office! That's how stinking bad the democrats are!

There's a bill sneaking through committee right now to take off the restriction of two-year terms for the presidency. My feeling is, it's the senators and congressmen and women who need the restriction. They have long since lost their value to our nation and representing the people who foolishly voted for them.

This is just pitiful! And, I'm sorry, but he represents the viewpoint of most of the democratic leaders. Including Stabenow, Levin, Levin, etc. Fortunately for you, Mr. Conyers, you don't have to live under the Obam'ha'care system you're shoving down our throats.

I'm sorry I voted for you. You do NOT deserve our trust.

Is he serious? It's his ***** job to read the bill and understand it. I swear the God there is no hope for America. An escaped mental patient can run the country better than they can. With all the "bright" ideas that our leaders have been coming up with lately, well it makes me thing that they all did espace from a mental institution. Sane people cannot possibly be this stupid and reckless. It's about freaking time we revolted.

One thing you will not get from the other side is honesty. If you really think that all Republican congressmen read 1000-page bills before voting on them, you should move to Fantasy Island. Hervé Villechaize and Retardo Montalbán await you...

On a side note, do we really need a Phoenix Conservative Examiner AND a Phoenix Republican Examiner? Couldn't the two positions be combined into one "Super Examiner" position?

Also, as pointed out below, he is not a senator. Scott - did you know that you could edit your stories to correct mistakes?
