Obama's frightening new attack on the Constitution

AP Photo/Charles Dharapak

Imagine how people would have reacted if President Bush had been caught trying to sneak through legislation that would have illegally given him the power to take over and destroy any financial institution he pleased, on a whim, with zero checks and balances.

That is what Democrats are quietly rushing through Congress for Obama.

It's called H.R. 4173 and it is already through the House. If it is signed into law, Obama will literally gain the kind of terrifying, un-checked power usually reserved for fascists and Third World dictators--the power to strong-arm, intimidate and crush any business that gets in his way. There will not even be judicial oversight.

What's that? Your company refuses to go "green?" Expect a knock at your door. Your business donated to the wrong party? You will be receiving a letter. Your company resists union takeovers? There will be consequences.

If Obama doesn't like what your business is doing, Obama simply gets to take it over, fire the executives, sell off all its stocks, and basically burn it to the ground.

Think about how hysterically Democrats excoriated Bush for merely wanting the power to intercept phone calls from foreign terrorists. Despite the fact that foreigners don't even have rights under our Constitution, we spent nearly eight years straight listening to the left mindlessly hyperventilate about Bush being Hitler and trampling imaginary constitutional rights.

Yet here we now sit, watching those very same Democrats blindly cheer on an actual liberty-killing extremist as he tears the Constitution to shreds, illegally seizing control over one industry after another and destroying the economy at record speed.

Again, when the chips are down, liberals stand for nothing beyond Democrat power.

Oh, let me stop you at foreigners "don't even have rights" under our Constitution. The Constitution states clearly that the Government will not deprive any "person" of life, liberty, or property, including intellectual property, without "due process of law". "Person" does not mean US citizen, it means ANY PERSON from any nation. This is how legal immigrants have rights here.

And do not glorify the Patriot Act, that was an unconstitutional bill passed in illegal proceedings not unlike the proceedings of Obamacare, that allows the unconstitutional searching and seizing of people's private property, phone records, and library records. The aforementioned belong to innocent "persons" which the government no right to harass in the name of the fake "War on Terror".

    Period.

Robert - You've got a funny definition of "arbitrary". The only part of the article that you linked to that comes close to what you describe is the following:

"And it would let the Treasury secretary — with support from regulators and the approval of a special panel of three bankruptcy judges — take over any giant company that posed systemic risk to financial stability, and essentially force it out of business."

But it's really hard to objectively read that statement as giving "the president the power to arbitrarily destroy businesses." I'd say you're playing fast and loose with the facts to try to make them fit your preconceived conclusion.

I am not an economist. Having said that - I am genuinely confused. Weren't we the people angry that we gave money with no strings attached and the companies/banks whatever proceeded to give themselves big bonuses. Is there another bill with teeth out there that addresses that issue? We really seem to lose sight of the objective of - should God Forbid - that we find ourselves here again what are we going to do better/different. Are we really advocating the total lack of control from anywhere except the companies/banks?

This article is simply ridiculous. First of all the previous administration DID sneak through legislation that sidesteeped Constitutionally guaranteed checks and balances. It's called the Patriot Act, rushed through Congress without most having even read the bill. This country saw its biggest constitutional threat when the Bush administration systematically dismantled many of our Constitutionally protections under it. The Patriot Act authorizes warrentless surveillance of US citizens...not foreigners. That means the government can tap your phone or even search your house without benefit of the courts or anyone else giving permission. But instead of taking offense over that real threat to our freedom, you're complaining about a bill that protects us from big banks. The House bill now being debated puts back some of the safeguards that were taken away, safeguards that prevented the meltdown we recently experienced in the banking industry for decades.

Here's a few questions for everyone of you on here. How much government do you want? How much guidance do you need from an entity that DOES NOT have your best interests in mind? Why do you need the government to tell you what to do? Why do you all act like this is a game of kickball and half of you can say "we won, get over it!"? What did you win? A Nanny state? You can't think for yourselves? Maybe before you start mindlessly arguing about a stupid opinion column, you could all read the Constitution and realize that we need to clean house, and remind these "representatives" that they are not ROYALTY, they are not your parents, they are merely stewards of this nation. They love this. They watch both sides nag, bitch and complain, while they raise taxes, make us more dependent, let in illegals, cut deals, gain power, and tighten their hands around our necks. Wake up, idiots.

Barry, you just don't seem to get it. What makes a news source "legitimate"? Parroting your world view, or being nothing more than a propaganda arm for the Obama administration?

There are legitimate, verifiable concerns raised in this article, and any fair minded person should welcome scrutiny of the allegations. That's what a free press is supposed to do in a free society.

This isn't a left vs. right issue! We ALL cherish freedom, and we ALL need to unite against ANY government entity that wants to suppress liberty. Having the ability to shut down private businesses without any regard for due process is what happened in Germany in the late 1930s. Are you saying this is OK, because it's YOUR GUY in power?

Would you give this same power to a Republican president after winning a future election? No? Then WHY would you trust Obama with this kind of tyranny? Wasn't the takeover of GM frightening enough?

Hey NotontheStupidSide - Liberal Democrats have destroyed the educational system, destroying our national security which will cause us to have another terrorist attack and destroying our economy helped greatly by Bill Clinton's great idea to allow low income people to get high mortgages for big houses. Now with what Enemy #1 is doing in the White House, he is farther destroying our national security, weakening our economy even more - he did not like that our economy was getting better.
So how can you say with a straight face that you are not on the stupid side - democrats and republicians are both part of the problem! It is time to have a revolution in this country!!!
