An illegal immigrant from Iran named Hamid Malekpour was discovered last month smuggling a huge load of sniper rifles and high-powered weaponry across the Canadian border into Washington State. He has since been arrested and charged with entering the country illegally with firearms and ammunition, as well as filing a false report with a federal agency.
It has been covered locally and by some bloggers, but that's pretty much it.
From the Yamhill Valley News Register:
[Agents] found a .50-caliber sniper rifle, two .308-caliber sniper rifles, three .300-caliber sniper rifles, eight law enforcement style .223-caliber rifles, three Glock semi-automatic handguns, 100 .223-caliber magazines, 3,800 rounds of .223-caliber ammunition, various high-powered scopes and other equipment.
[Sheriff] Crabtree marveled at the find. 'Have you ever seen a .50-caliber round?' he asked. 'That’s a big round — the stuff you shoot at airplanes and tanks.'
The only reason Malekpour was caught was that he became sloppy--and that he entered the country from Canada, where the border is at least somewhat controlled.
He repeatedly crossed the border and took trips back and forth to Iran under different aliases, while using a phony gun dealership as a front for his operations called, "McMinnville Hunting & Police Supplies Inc."--an obscure, shuttered office with no signs that the local police had never heard of, which had a bogus, half-constructed web site and an expired business license.
He was also caught in a number of lies about everything from his passport to why he was entering the country.
Again, even a broken clock is still right twice per day. Eventually, we're going to have to rely on something more than the persistent incompetence of those seeking to mass-murder us.

You really need to learn how to read, Moon. Nothing in the article you linked to claims he smuggled the firearms INTO the US from Canada - in fact, the feds followed him from the Oregon gun shop, after seeing him load boxes of guns, TO the storage facility in Blaine.
And the story was not ignored; AP moved it and Seattle Times has been following it.

Lifeisdeath- The .50cal round has been used as an anti-aircraft for 80 years. They use tracer ammo to track the flight of the bullets when shooting at low flying aircraft. My the law enforcement community isn't ignorant after all?
Lifeisdeath, yeah planes cruise at an altitude unreachable by a .50 cal, but every plane has to land or take off and the range of a .50 (accurate up to about 1.5 miles)is great enough that you could pick off a plane easily from any position within several miles around an airport. A .50 cal will go through a manhole cover with ease (2 inches of cast iron) and is able to defeat almost any type of light armored vehicle depending on what type of round is used. You could literally cut a brick and mortar building in half with an M2, which isn't what this guy had but uses the same round.
Those .223 rifles? That is an M-16 and "police style" probably means fully automatic or burst fire. Remember Mumbai? I think 3,800 rounds would be more than enough to re-enact the exact same scenario here only this time you would have a heavy weapon as fire support to take out any armored SWAT vehicles that show up.

JackV: The .50 caliber was only used in an anti-aircraft role with dual or quad-mounted M-2's, using the theory of massed fire.
A single .50, either semi or bolt (and you'd have to be awfully lucky using a single Ma Deuce), simply cannot provide the firepower to effectively engage air targets.
Don: The .50 is accurate to 1.5 miles in the hands of a very, very capable sniper, under perfect conditions. In the hands of your average jihadist, I'd say their effective range would be 6-700m ..... tops.
JackV, YOU are illiterate - NO WHERE in the Yamhill Valley News Register (the article Moon linked to) does it say that. Only Moon says it - and he's WRONG.
The ARTICLE says he picked up a bunch of guns IN OREGON and the others were found IN A WASHINGTON STATE STORAGE FACILITY when they got a warrant.
They did NOT find him smuggling weapons INTO the US - and in fact, it would be more likely he was attempting to smuggle them FROM the US INTO CANADA - especially considering the .50-cal is illegal in Canada.
And since he is a licensed dealer in Canada, there's a good chance he was trying to fill illegal orders for 'special' collectors.
As for the rest, what defines 'sniper rifle' in this context, other than cop claims. The .50-cal in either bolt action or semi-auto is used such, but it also has other uses.
The .308-cal. rifles? Bolt or semi-auto? Scoped? How are they "sniper rifles" as opposed to the scoped .308 rifles often used to hunt elk in the Pacific Northwest??
Snark... 50 cal. are NOT illegal in Canada. Google the Mac 50. I know several people (civilians) that have them . There is also a company here in Calgary Alberta that manufactures bolt action 50's based on the Browning 50cal round.

When LEOs make stupid statements about firearms, it hurts us all because those that don't know better believe what they say. You will shoot a .50 at a tank...once.
