Obama promotes serve.gov

Obama's remarks at today's ceremony at Texas A&M again highlighted government website www.serve.gov as a good way to connect volunteers to organizations needing help.  The Houston Chronicle has the full text of the President's speech; here's an excerpt:

That's why this summer we launched United We Serve, a nationwide effort calling on all Americans to make service part of their daily lives. And we partnered with more than 400 organizations; made more than 250,000 service opportunities available on serve.gov; and watched as nonprofits, and foundations, and corporations, and individuals spent hundreds of thousands of hours serving their communities.

Earlier this week, Breitbart's BigGovernment site outed Serve.gov as promoting volunteer opportunities at the beleagured ACORN.  Those posts have since been scrubbed, but I wondered what other opportunities this administration might be promoting.

Typing in the keyword "health" and selecting "Houston" brought up Planned Parenthood's need for volunteers to protect clients from the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil participants.  Their job?  Make sure prolife protestors don't speak or give any information to women seeking abortions at the clinic.

Also under healthcare was a listing to become an unpaid lobbyist for AARP pushing healthcare reform.

Typing in "Republican" brought up very few opportunities, including two posts for volunteering with the Republican party.

Choosing "democrat" as a keyword revealed several hits from Organizing For America, Obama's campaign group.  See the screenshot, above, taken around 10:00 pm Houston time today.

Obviously, not everyone will agree with every volunteer opportunity listed.  There were listings that ranged from volunteers at a magazine promoting homosexuality to positions leading bible studies at crisis pregnancy centers.  However, it is troubling when clearly partisan, political positions are being staffed up using a government website as a clearinghouse.  Additionally, Planned Parenthood has also been outed on tape as not reporting statuatory rape and covering up abusive relationships that they were required by law to report.  An audit in Washington found that they were intentionally overbilling Medicaid, as well.

While there were many laudable volunteer efforts listed, remember this website is funded by taxpayers.   Should taxpayer funds be used to help the abortion industry?  Should taxpayer dollars promote my.barackobama.com?

It's bad enough that the White House wholeheartedly promotes civil service, but says not a word about military service. (Unless you're homosexual, that is...)
