What's driving the continued skyrocketing gun sales?

It began last October as citizens began to sense that the 2008 elections would bring the most anti-gun partisans to Washington in U.S. history.  Their hunch was correct.  November of '08 witnessed a sweep into D.C. of Senators, Congressmen, and a President that were all on record supporting strict gun control, many of whom had even supported an outright ban of all handguns in America.

Thus, the great American gun rush ensued in full force.

Citizens by the millions across the land inundated their local gun shops to purchase their goods.  They were convinced that their newly-elected government would attempt to strip them of their Constitutional right to self-defense.  And they responded by buying up firearms of all kinds.

In the beginning the sales boom was driven by one overriding factor--Americans wanted to buy guns before they were outlawed or restricted so severely that purchasing them would be rendered nearly useless.

But here we are nearly 8 months later, and there is no sign that the great American gun rush is slowing down.  In fact, gun sales continue to skyrocket, increasing month by month over the same period last year.

In a report provided by Gun Pundit, background checks for citizens seeking to purchase firearms have continued to skyrocket, and May of this year was the busiest month of May ever.

To be sure, the threat of gun bans and the assault on Second Amendment rights still loom large.  Congress is controlled by vocal anti-gun proponents.  The White House is controlled by an individual who once stated that he wished to ban all handguns in America.

But there is a much deeper at issue at play here, beneath the surface.  According to several of my sources among gun owners here in South Carolina in particular, a significant number of Americans who are buying guns are preparing for a potential all-out assault by their government on all of their rights.  These Americans are increasingly concerned that the present Administration represents the most significant threat to human liberty and the Constitution that we have ever witnessed in this nation.  And many of these have made it abundantly clear that they have no intention of giving up on the most successful experiment in human liberty the world has ever seen.  They will fight to preserve it.

The growing movement among many of the several states to affirm the 10th Amendment by passing legislation limiting the scope of the federal government is a perfect illustration of the extent of the concern.  Texas, Montana, Tennessee, and a host of other states are thumbing their noses at the federal government, proclaiming in effect that they will tolerate encroachments on the 10th Amendment no more.

And millions of citizens are armed to the hilt waiting for the Feds to attempt an oppressive move.

The question is, is the federal government willing to kill several million U.S. citizens in order to make a point about its all-encompassing power?  Or will the Feds back off,  realizing that their power comes from the states and the citizens?

I know any number of liberals buying guns now because of the number of conservative nutjobs going off the deep end. Much scarier than any threat from the government, which doesn't exist anyway.

gdad, nothing could be further from the truth, in fact comments like YOURS are one of the many things that are fueling gun sales.

There IS a threat from the Government, you are just too blind to see it.

Oops, also forgot to mention that conservatives are whipping up fear with absolutely no facts behind it.

"gdad, nothing could be further from the truth, in fact comments like YOURS are one of the many things that are fueling gun sales."

Comments like mine? How could my comment fuel gun sales?

You ARE aware that most of the recent public killings have been by conservative anti-abortion, anti-illegal immigration, white supremicists, aren't you? Oh wait, those are just isolated incidents that have nothing to do with conservatives.

    Sure.

What's really funny about the faux hysteria whipped up by conservatives is that the majority of Democrats in Congress would vote against anything that would severely limit gun rights.

Most of the gun-buying mania is fueled by gun and ammunition manufacturers. They're raking in the bucks big time and laughing all the way to the bank.

Has everybody else noticed that gdad is incapable of debating the issue without the use of Lies and demeaning language?

He states: “I know any number of liberals buying guns now because of the number of conservative nutjobs going off the deep end”.

Gee, I thought leftist were supposed to be the tolerant ones, incapable of being judgmental, well there goes that myth.

    He goes on:

“Much scarier than any threat from the government, which doesn't exist anyway. “

Anyone who has paid attention the past couple of months knows that is a LIE. Either gdad doesn't know of the many statements made by those In the government on the subject, in which case he is ignorant on the subject. Or, he does know and is simply Lying about the intentions of the government to disarm the law-abiding.

    @gdad
So are we supposed to assume that you have all the facts neatly presented and all is right in the world except that there are crazy conservatives with guns running around doing all the "recent public killings"?
The 7 random killings in Chicago, you know the highly populated conservative town was just another one of us. The Racist liberal that went to the Jewish Holocaust Center was a conservative in drag? The Black Panthers during the election had the night stick in his hand because he knew he would be arrested if he had a pistol was what, another conservative spouting off about how the white man would feel to be under the boot of the black mans power. Let me guess he was a conservative in black face makeup/disguise? The ACORN thing is just hype & they're a law abiding group that won't open their financial books up to their own Chapter Presidents because they feel they will not understand financing & accountability? GDAD you really are gulping not sipping the cool aid. Wake U

There are an awful lot of people that are very afraid that the government is going off the deep end, and with good reason. Not to mention that they come from many political stripes, not just conservatives. I've just finished up a debate of sorts at CLO with a person that thinks H.R. 45 is just fine and dandy. He appears to have more intelligence than gdad, but, I think that I can assume that they are both in the same boat politically.

Please face it, the NRA and the gun and ammunition manufacturers have ginned up a non-existent threat that has resulted in a huge increase in profits for them. Why are you paying such huge prices for ammunition -- if you can get it at all? It has nothing to do with the government -- it has to do with hysteria that has no basis in fact.

Besides wanting to find out what the H*ll gdad is smoking, I would like to point out the obvious fact that there is only one reason for the government to Disarm it's law-abiding citizens with HR45, draconian taxes, international treaties or what ever method they come up with.

Face it, disarming the law-abiding doesn't reduce crime – it increases it.

The ONLY reason the government has to Disarm it's law-abiding citizens is to empower itself and turn the citizens into subjects.

Why is that so difficult to understand?

The fear that the Federal Government will turn on the American people is considered a real threat by many people.

There’s also chatter from retired and active duty law enforcement and military that the only reason the Elite through their puppet Obama hasn’t pulled the plug on the second amendment is the fact people are buying guns and ammo like there’s no tomorrow.

So keep buying guns and ammo at least until the 2010 elections!

The Elite thought they bamboozled the people with Obama-nation the illegal immigrant president.

As I remember some time ago, there was the same
BS about no more oil the well has gone dry, but
if you get to the gas station now you can fill up before the last gallon is gone, remember.
Well I hear the same thing only the item of interest is different. If this buying frenzy
continues you'll have to have A good credit score in order to by A single bullet, every house will be bulging at the seems with weaponry of all sorts. To me the only folks
who might come out on top will be the arms manufactures, who sells these guns at inflated prices, and the thugs who breaks into your home and steals your guns,so that you'll have to by more guns,to prevent thugs from breaking into your home and stealing your guns.I suggest
that we slow down and catch our breath, let the arms catch up with the ammo shortage, the first thing that would happen is that the price might go down. With the walls in every house in this country bowed outward due to stockpiles
of ammo and guns,no one would ever attack us.

gdad, your posts indicate the type of logic and rationalization that guide your thinking. With that in mind, I will attempt to communicate my response in a manner that even you cannot misunderstand or misconstrue:

    “gdad, you are an idiot.”

I think that is clear enough to be completely comprehended by anyone that sees it.
