Cuba: the same old communist goons and thugs

With all of the talk about 'opening up' Cuba to travel and ending the decades-old trade embargo, one would think that there had been a dramatic turnaround in the Communist regime that is known for its brutality and oppression against its citizens.

When the regime first came to power, Castro's hit-man Che Guevara conducted a blood-bath of historic proportions in the name of ridding the country of any opposition to the new Communist leader and perpetuating the ominous goals of 'Marxist progressivism' in controlling every aspect of public and private life.

The fact that Miami has a huge Cuban-American population today is ample testimony of the dangerous and bloodthirsty objectives of the Cuban Communist machine.  Cubans who valued liberty, as well as their lives, fled to the U.S.

In the years that have followed, essentially nothing has changed in the Communist island to our south.  The Commies are still in power.  The people are still oppressed.  Brave souls still attempt to flee to the U.S.

The thing that has changed is the rhetoric and attitude of American progressives, liberal politicians, and their mouthpieces in the mainstream media.  Fidel Castro and Che Guevara are treated as heroes in some quarters, particularly among Obama supporters, many of whom paid homage to the mass murderer Guevara by displaying his picture or wearing t-shirts bearing his image.

Despite the Left's love affair with Cuban Communists, however, the island is run by the same old Commie gang of goons and thugs as always for the past 50 years.

A perfect case in point is the Cuban blogger who was denied access to the Internet.

NewsBusters reports that a Cuban blogger who writes for the Huffington Post, of all places, secretly recorded an incident proving that Cuban citizens are still living under the heavy hand of oppression, although HuffPo readers like to assume such things are not true.  Yoani Sanchez reminds HuffPo readers on a regular basis that their assumptions concerning Cuba's 'refreshing enlightenment' are simply not true.

In this case she has the video to prove it:

Yoani's latest blog post {is one that recounts an incident} in which a clandestine camera recorded a regime official denying internet access to a Cuban...because he is Cuban...at a Havana hotel. Yes, foreigners are permitted to go on the Web but this "privilege" is denied to Cuban nationals in a bizarre form of Communist apartheid. The reaction to this outrage from Huffington Post readers? None as of this writing except for one very funny yet incredibly sad comment which reflects perfectly the bizarre state of leftwing mentality. I beg you not to cheat and scroll to the end. To fully appreciate that comment you must first read (or watch the video) the transcript of the encounter between a Cuban denied access to the Web by a regime toadie. You can read the English translation of the video by placing your cursor over the center. Yoani Sanchez begins her blog by explaining the internet denial (for Cubans in Cuba) of internet access.

Readers may view the video and read the transcripts in the Sanchez blog post by clicking on the link to NewsBusters provided above.

The fact that some Americans of the 'progressive' persuasion actually defend and promote this despicable regime is a disgusting display of just how far the Left is willing to go in order to promote its cause...even to the point of becoming apologists for the assault on human rights.

Some years ago I taught an E.M.T. course in El Salvador. During the day the place was generally peaceful. But after the sun went down the "Che's" took over. The murderous leftest' henchmen that had originally been trained by the left's saint were still going about their brutal business. This was years after Rangers sent him to his just deserts. Now, we have to listen to cretin's espousing him as some kind of hero?

your opening sentence worries me. it should be ok to trade with them despite how despicable their gov't is. i agree with basically everything else, but that's your opening sentence. it takes away credibility.

I hate to say it but I see where RPS is going. "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations – entangling alliances with none." ~ Thomas Jefferson
There is not a standard mentioned, and I cannot believe that is by accident. I agree that the hailing of O's discussion about Cuba is nothing new or radical, I also agree that the media and left sided blogos going ga-ga over it is ridiculous. And believe me I am as annoyed as anyone over the praise offered to che' and the castro clan. May their deaths be a repeating circle of pain. That being said I want trade with Cuba, and every other nation to not only be on the table, but in play. Embargos rarely, if ever, hurt the tyrants in power, they do however ALWAYS harm the citizenry. Just my $.02, and to be honest I didn't even notice the (potentially)implied resistance to trade in the opening. Another good essay with valid points Anthony. Hats off to you.

Cuba is a statist dump.....having said that however, the best way to de-stabilize Castro is through free trade and travel....Ron Paul was right...
