Congress fears voters; meetings in home districts cancelled

We got 'em where we want 'em.

Reports are coming in today that Congressmen and Senators on Capitol Hill are so afraid of the ire of their constituents back home that they are canceling town hall meetings right and left:

Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

This is actually very good news, my friends.  The Founders of this Republic often said that government should fear the people, and not the other way around.

Now that it is clear we have gotten their attention with our sheer outrage over their planned government takeover of healthcare, their cockeyed scheme to ruin the American economy with 'cap and trade,' and their asinine trillion-dollar bailouts of fat cats on Wall Street, the Congress vermin seem to wish to crawl back back behind the walls rather than face their constituents who put them in office.

Here's more:

“I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”

In Bishop’s case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry.

Within an hour of the disruption, police were called in to escort the 59-year-old Democrat — who has held more than 100 town hall meetings since he was elected in 2002 — to his car safely.

The citizens are angry, and they're not going to take it anymore.  Unless Democrats in particular, and a few Republicans to boot, promise the voters to back off their opportunistic attempts to change the very nature and fabric of the country in response to a few cooked up 'emergencies,' then the rage they are feeling now will only get worse.

Here is a key excerpt from the article cited above:

The targets in most cases are House Democrats, who over the past few months have tackled controversial legislation including a $787 billion economic stimulus package, a landmark energy proposal and an overhaul of the nation’s health care system.

Democrats, acknowledging the increasing unruliness of the town-hall-style events, say the hot-button issues they are taking on have a lot to do with it.

Uh, excuse me, but, it's clearly NOT the nature of the 'hot button' issues that has folks riled.  It's the manner in which Democrats and Obama are going about addressing them.

If the citizens knew that their representatives in Congress had been honest with them and then proposed sensible solutions to problems that did not involve dismantling everything that's right about America, then there would be no rage in the heartland today.

But the fact is Obama lied and Congress lied.  The economy will recover without spending trillions of our tax dollars.  We don't need to dismantle the best healthcare system in the world in order to cover roughly 8 million who don't have insurance.  And we don't need to pay $3000 more per year in energy costs just so that Obama and company can congratulate themselves on how 'green' they are.

Here is some advice for voters:  if your Congressman or Senator even hints at not holding town hall meetings with constituents, go to their home offices and demand that they do so.  And don't leave until you get their commitment to come out of hiding and face the voters.

And here is some advice for Congressmen and Senators: you may think you can hide from the people who put you in office, but we've got your number.  We are watching every move you make and every word that proceeds from your mouths.  And we are going to hold you totally accountable in 2010.

Thus, you had best go out and face the music.

There is a great change a-comin' in 2010.

Yes, we are mad. The thing that is really disturbing is that these men and woman who are suppose to represent us are not representing us at all. Whom are they listening to when they pass these bills - Are they not suppose to be there representing and listening to our concerns and doing what we expect them to do. Should there not be a vote at home and that is how our representatives would vote? No, they are being strong armed by some unknown entity to us and changing their vote based on that. We have no pull any longer. I just do not get this political stuff ???? They are our representatives (bad words, bad words) Don't know what to say about this! I've never been political before but now I'm mad as (bad word)

Rep. Dan Boren, OKLA.-Dist.2, it has been confirmed will be holding no townhall meetings this recess. I have never heard of a "wild" crowd at any of his meetings before (and they have always been few and far between). Dan is OUR elected representative, what is it about accountability does he not understand. To not afford We, the people, an opportunity, at such a crucial time, to voice concerns and opinions flies in the face of representative democracy. "Where Are You, Dan?" It is the peoples duty to ask questions of you, it is your duty to answer those questions. We shouldn't have to come looking and begging for you to address issues. "Where are you, Dan?" Sneaking into counties unannounced and speaking with 4 other citizens at the commissioners offices in the court house does not count as a "Meeting". "Where Are You, Dan?"

If they don't have town halls, just show up and wait for them at their local offices. You have a right to be there and they have the responsibility as your elected official to listen to your concerns.

Nothing is going to happen to these people because the voters are too concerned with left vs right to vote in people who will represent them. The elected representatives know we will keep voting them in and so they don't care and will keep spouting platitudes to calm the electorate. The mewing of the sheeple just makes it more inconvenient to them.

I called Mike Honda's office (Silicon Valley 15th district Rep) and he is going to have one phone town hall meeting on August 26th. Nothing more scheduled. Plus, the one he has scheduled is not even on his website.

The gal at his office seemed a bit perturbed when I said that he wasn't serving his constituents by neglecting them on the eve of such important legislation.

Unfortunately too many of our elected & appointed officials are bought & paid for, which is more important to them than abiding by the oath of office they took to obey, support & defend the Constitution of the United States. FOLLOW THE MONEY To It's Source!!

    Thanks for the plug Anthony!
This situation disturbed me on several levels. Ours is a representative type of democracy, a Constitutional Republic. When the elected representatives refuse to listen? It is our God given right, secured by the blood of our forefathers, to ring their bell! If they refuse to face those that they Laird it over? Well then, we need to go to them. Now, I am not at all suggesting violence. However, should these people continue to ignore we the people? I'm not at all sure that we can stop them via election denial. That does after all is said and done take some time. They could deny us our birthrights while in session before the elections. Now, having said that; There is a rather old American tradition, outlawed by lawyers and politicians, go figure. Anyways, hot tar, a feather bed, and angry people tend to get the attention of despots...
