The Black Eyed Peas punk Oprah Winfrey and I've Gotta Feeling the result was epic (video)

During Grammy week at a BMI songwriting panel Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas told attendees that sometimes with all that is going on in the world people just want and need stupid lyrics. He was describing "My Humps" but the description might also apply to their latest hit "I Gotta Feeling." Actually the case has been made. (video)

But the Black Eyed Peas managed to turn their incredibly cheesy yet catchy, hook-laden song in to one immensely enjoyable live performance and soon-to-be viral video. (watch below)

Before appearing at Oprah's Block Party with Jennifer Hudson, Rascal Flatts, and Cris Angel, the Black Eyed Peas recruited volunteer dancers via talent agencies, twitter, and facebook to help with their performance. Dancers learned a choreography to the song "I Gotta Feeling" which resulted in the largest flash mob dance to date. 21,000 people strong.

Spoilers:

  • The Black Eyed Peas start their performance of "I've Gotta Feeling" to a less than enthusiastic crowd.
  • Approximately 15 seconds in to the song one ebullient dancer begins to jump around and is featured around the 27 second mark.
  • A small group of professional dancers join in around 45 seconds.
  • Gradually every 15 seconds or so more members of the crowd join in.
  • Chicago looks amazing.
  • Oprah was surprised by the dancers and her reaction is syrupy sweet. Proof at 1:22.
  • Oprah busts a move around 1:45

After the performance a surprised Oprah said, "that is the coolest thing ever!"

Will.I.Am thought you might want to learn the dance and an instructional video is now available.  The Black Eyed Peas's "I Gotta Feeling" remains No. 1 on the U.S. record chart for an 11th week, Billboard.com reported Thursday.
