When it was reported that The Who would be performing at the Super Bowl this year, fans began speculating which songs they would pull out of their catalog. While it was assumed they would perform their biggest hits, there's only so many songs that can fit in the time-limit of the Super Bowl halftime show.
While the set list of the halftime show is usually kept a secret until the band takes the stage at the big game, guitarist Pete Townshend seems to have no problem discussing what songs they are planning to bring to Miami in two weeks. Townshend states that he wants to keep the set list full of songs that are more celebratory.
"We’re kinda doing a mashup of stuff," Townshend said in a Billboard interview. “A bit of ‘Baba O’Riley,’ a bit of ‘Pinball Wizard,’ a bit of the close of ‘Tommy,’ a bit of ‘Who Are You,’ and a bit of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again.’ It works — it’s quite a saga.”
Watching this halftime show performance will be a great preview for Pittsburghers that are hoping to catch Roger Daltrey when he hits Mellon Arena with Eric Clapton next month.
The Who are just one of the many classic rock groups that the NFL have recruited to perform ever since MTV was fired from the gig following the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" catastrophe. Since then, halftime performers have included Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Thanks for the heads-up on the playlist, Brian. It should be a great show. Though the voices aren't what they used to be, they will more than make up for it with their musicality. We won't hear the long jams but that's television. Another timely article my man; keep up the good work.
