Uncle Lucius took the intimate crowd gathered at Wilbert’s on Saturday, February 26th on a trip back into their southern soul. Visiting from Austin, Texas and en route to open for Leon Russell on Times Square their soulful southern rock brought some spirit to a blustery night in this northern town. Their unique sound and fantastic talent combines country, rock and blues in a way that only four true Texan natives could fashion.
The members of Uncle Lucius all hail from different parts of Texas, but all convened on Austin in the quest of music. The group has been together for five years, but settled into their current configuration not long before they recorded their most recent album, Pick Your Head Up, released in April 2009. Uncle Lucius consists of Kevin Galloway – vocals and rhythm guitar, Mike Carpenter – lead guitar, harmonica, vocals, Hal Vorpahl – bass guitar, and Josh Greco – drums, percussion, and vocals.
On stage, Uncle Lucius headed through their set with the feel of renegades coming to take over the town. And with their amazing performance, they definitely made their mark. Kevin Galloway’s soulful voice draws the listener in, bringing them back with him to his Texan home. Mike Carpenter’s guitar playing is strong and inventive, at one point pulling out a bow to play his guitar like an oversized fiddle. Hal Vorpahl brought magic rhythm and soul out of the strings of his bass. And Josh Greco kept the beat hot on his drums as he simultaneously belted harmonies into the microphone. This band is definitely one headed somewhere, and looking at their busy spring schedule… they’ll be finding their way fast.
Taking the stage before Uncle Lucius was a band of a very different genre, but also filled with a strong spirit and sound. Centric is composed of Northeast Ohio musicians; Angie Sims & Charlie Grigsby on vocals, Antoine Dunn on keyboard & vocals, Pete Ahn on bass, Mike Vaughn on guitar, and Travis Payton on drums. This hot band hits the gamut of popular music covering R&B, hip-hop, pop, reggae and rock. They’re in town awaiting their next overseas engagement, regularly taking residence throughout Asia. Their energetic sound and talented musicianship makes them an easy crowd pleaser. Try to catch them before they head off to entertain on the other side of the world.
