Bill Burke & The Tertium Quid Percussion Ensemble
The partnership of Bill Burke and the Tertium Quid Percussion Ensemble brings four musicians to the stage that create an intricate, inviting and addictive sound that takes the audience on a rhythmic journey into worlds unknown. This was definitely how they launched the evening at The Beachland Ballroom on Friday, April 2nd. The crowd could not help but be drawn into the energy on stage whether they had come knowingly to witness this spectacular performance, or if they were there with curiosity but had been drawn out that evening for the soulful sounds of Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue that would grace the stage later that evening.

Bill Burke
Bill Burke on his 8-string guitar was the only player not exploring a purely percussion based instrument. But his unique style of playing seamlessly wove the stringed instrument’s melodies into the intricate rhythms emerging from the three percussionists. Rather than plucking or strumming, Burke uses a unique two-handed tap-style of playing on his unconventional 8-string guitar. This technique likens the guitar to the manner in which one would play the piano – an instrument that bridges the gap between the string and percussion families.

Harry Pepper of The Tertium Quid Percussion Ensemble
The layered sounds of Bill Burke’s guitar were met with the harmonious rhythms of the Tertium Quid Percussion Ensemble. The Tertium Quid Percussion Ensemble is comprised of three accomplished and long-playing percussionists who don’t stop beating when they step from the stage, but take their drumming far deeper into their lives and those around them. Between PJ Roduta on the kit, Bryan Favio on the congas and Harry Pepper on the djembe they brought the sound and spirit of an entire percussion section as each reached beyond the drum(s) before them and into an array of different percussion devices.
The union and relationship of sound between Bill Burke and the Tertium Quid Percussion Ensemble created a music that took on a life of it’s own; reaching out to touch the audience and taking the musicians along for the ride. They will be returning to Cleveland together in the near future – an opportunity for a musical adventure that should not be missed. Take the time on May 15th to find your way down to The Winchester Tavern & Music Hall at 12112 Madison Avenue in Lakewood, Ohio. The night will be filled with the magic of the rhythm and sound of life.
