The Soldier Thread ~ Austin, TX Indie-rock
As a local music writer, it can be a daunting task to separate over-hyped bands from the real thing. Austin's The Soldier Thread is authentic, local, and plays hauntingly beautiful indie-pop music. Wednesday night the band played to a small crowd at Club Mixx as part of the entertainment for Insite Austin Magazine's . Frantic Clam and Bamboo Shoots also performed.
Club Mixx is located on the east end of the Sixth street entertainment district. The club looks like it could use a facelift, but the bar staff was friendly and professional and they do have a patio out back. The cavernous space with a high ceiling and lots of elbow room was not the ideal setting for a group like The Solider Thread. In a more appropriate setting, their performance might be better framed. There were also numerous sound issues prior to the band actually beginning their set. Maybe their set-list was planned to be brief, but it seemed like they had to finish the set just when the band seemed to be hitting it's stride.
The Soldier Thread is comprised of founding members, Justin McHugh (keyboards/vocals/songwriting) and Todd Abels (guitar) They recruited the captivating Patricia Lynn (violist/vocals) and added Chance Gilmore (bass) and Drew Vandiver (drums). The Solider Thread's unique harmonies stem primarily from the ethereal voice of Lynn who also boasts talent playing the viola as well. She sounds like a more accomplished Bjork who can play an instrument the uniquely compliments the guitar work of Abels and McHugh's Keyboards and vocal support.
McHugh thanked a audience a few times for showing on a cold, blustery, Wednesday night. The crowd was not large, but attentive and responsive to The Soldier Thread's brief performance. McHugh mentioned their closing song was also one of their favorites. It was easy to see why as the song built to a satisfying crescendo, leaving the listener wanting to hear more. As any good performance should.
The Soldier Thread are currently at work on their second album, recording at Matchbox Studios in Austin with producer, Dwight Baker. They'll showcase the entire album at Stubb's BBQ on January 29th of next year according to band management.
