My First Earthquake at The Rickshaw Stop: December 2nd, 2009

At the same time Steven Patrick Morrissey was undoubtedly ripping his shirt off during a sprited rendition of "How Soon Is Now?" at Oakland's Paramount Theater Wednesday evening, a decidedly less maudlin (but, to editorialize for a moment, equally talented) affair was taking place back here across the bay: San Francisco rockers My First Earthquake played a rousing mid-week set Wednesday night at Hayes Valley indie haunt The Rickshaw Stop, opening for Seattle-based Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band and Southern California's The Growlers.

Wednesday night marked My First Earthquake's final show of 2009, and they were not going to let the nght go quietly. The first band on stage, Rebecca Bortman and company launched into a set of songs old and new, each one delivered with their trademark gusto (as well as Bortman's legendary dancing). Fan favorites such as "Meat Pies" and "Cool in the Cool Way" got the loyal and enthuasiastic audience dancing, and promises of a Christmas themed track and accompanying music video promsed to tide the faithful over until MFE resumes playing live in February 2010.

In fact, a casting call for the video--scheduled to shoot on Saturday--went out, as well. Naturally, the character the band is so eager to find is none other than a Hipster Santa Clause. Stay tuned, for as the holiday season draws ever closer, and shows harder to find, your Examiner will certanly share the completed video here. Yes, yes---you can thank her later.

That said, at the end of the night MFE put on another fun, energetic and danceworthy performance--an appropriate and fun way to bring their eventful year to a close. Here's to an even more fun and successful year in 2010 for this talented San Francisco band.
