Editors at The Warfield: February 8th, 2010

British indie quartet Editors rocked the Warfield in San Francisco Monday night—yes, Monday night, officially the weirdest night to attend a concert—and in their sweaty, passionate, rumbling live show came a thousand takeaway messages, among them being: no, they are nothing like Interpol (the band some think of when hearing singer Tom Smith's rolling baritone). Yes, they still "crank it up to 11" (to use an oft-referenced Spinal Tap joke). And yes—you still leave the show feeling as if you've experienced something almost sinfully intimate. The best part? You have.

Editors enjoy a pretty sizeable following in the bay area--not quite a sellout at the Warfield, but then again, it was a Monday night—but the crowd was equal parts college students, hipster indie kids, twentysomething professionals and a smattering of goths. This group meshed well together through New York-based openers The Dig and The Antlers, but however much the audience found themselves
able to get into these talented bands, impatience still permeated the cool air of the Warifeld. After all, its not every day—or every year—that the bay area is graced with the presence of Tom Smith and a band as talented, passionate and unique as Editors.

Just to lay it all out there, if we haven't already, Tom Smith is a force to be reckoned with. His deep baritone doesn't seem to match his slight build, but that is just part of the mystique—part of his charisma. You are hard pressed to take your eyes off of him as he performs, or rather, as he shows you exactly how he feels the music as he performs it. It is beautiful, undulating, downright mesmerizing. The music was all of this and so much more; a highlight of the show was fan favorite "Munich,", which featured dark, pulsating rhythms, spot-on vocals and the crowd singing along with every word. Editors are ostensibly on tour in support of their latest album, In This Light and on This Evening, but they played many old hits with equal enthusiasm. As usual, this fantastic concert is quite difficult to put into words.
