At their last show in the US before heading to Japan, Maroon 5 did not disappoint the nearly sold out crowd at Murat Theater in Indianapolis on Wednesday night. Their phenomenally popular bluesy rock pop songs resonated throughout the venue. The standard line up of lead singer Adam Levine, guitarist James Valentine, bassist Mickey Madden, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael and drummer Matt Flynn was rounded out with recent tour addition PJ Morton on keyboard.
Maroon 5 is a first-class live band. They were very clean and sounded even better live than on their albums. Adam Levine’s voice was crystal clear and in perfect tune, even through all of the technically challenging intervals written into their songs, in addition to the changed up riffs. Levine and Valentine squared off several times in mini guitar solo duels. Both are superb blues guitarists whose effortless playing was a true pleasure to hear.
Levine controlled the crowd with smooth swagger. His excellent vocal abilities combined with natural charisma helped enthrall the audience. They broke it down into an acoustic set in the middle of the show with the talented Carmichael on grand piano. They performed an excellent cover of Alicia Keys’ song If I Ain’t Got You. At the end of the acoustic version of their hit song She Will Be Loved, Levine split the crowd into two sections, getting each to sing a different part of the song perfectly overlaid on top of the other a capella, before joining back in with the full band to finish the song.
Before coming out for the encore, an enormous disco ball descended from the ceiling. It was hit with a series of spotlights creating a dazzling scene throughout the hall. This led into their groovy dance beat song Makes Me Wonder. Rounding out the show with their hit Sunday Morning, Maroon 5 left on a high note, with a musically elated crowd chatting about how much they enjoyed the show.
Their new album, Hands All Over, will be out on September 21 and is available for pre-order now on iTunes.
