Microsoft Technet posted this announcement on the Technet Evaluation Center page. We are just a few months out from the retail release. This download is the official copy. And you can get it up until August 20th. Keys are obtained from the site and the release is valid for you PC until June 1, 2010.

Microsoft is recommending the following specifications for this install:

1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor or higher.

  • To discover if you have this: right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and choose properties

1 GB of system memory

  • Check this in the same way.

16GB of available disk space

  • To check this: Open Explorer (File Manager) and right click on the C:\(Local Drive) and choose properties. The pink area shows your available disk space.

Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory

  • DirectX comes with a testing module. You can get it here.

Microsoft says the download of this product could take a few hours. If the response for the download is high, it could make it more difficult to get.

You must get a product key. If you already have one from a previous Release Candidate, you do not have to repeat this step.

You need to know which version to download. There is a 32-bit and a 64-bit. MIcrosoft advises that you check.

  • Click Start, right click on Computer, then click Properties if you are using Vista.
  • You can right click on My Computer from the desktop if you see the icon.

Release Candidate software is a great way to learn about the newest products before they become a retail offering.

The release date information in this article is incorrect. The Release Candidate is only available UNTIL August 20th. This is because the Release Candidate has been superceded by the RTM (Release To Manufacturing) version of Windows 7.

Microsoft has released the RTM Version of Windows 7 to volume licensing customers and MSDN subscribers earlier this month and on August 23rd, it will be available to Action Pack subscribers.

Pretty much ditto to what Jack wrote...that post is a little late outta the gate; the RC was available months ago - and will NOT be avilable after the 20th.

Better late than never, I suppose...
