YouTube will soon offer 1080p videos
Today YouTube added 1080p movies to its vast library of videos. The move makes Youtube very competitive with other video sites that have added high definition videos previously like Hulu.
YouTube added 720p HD video support over a year ago which allowed high definition videos to be uploaded to the site. However, many HDTVs and monitors now support 1080p and newer camcorders are arriving on the market with 1080p resolutions. While 720p HD videos are high definition, they are visually inferior to 1080p when viewed on larger screens.
According to Youtube's official blog, the first 1080p videos will be viewable next week. YouTube is also in the process of re-encoding videos that were upload in 1080p resolutions but scaled down to 720p. The result will hopefully bring a large selection of HD videos fairly soon.
