Windows 7 has a had a very successful launch and has sold more copies than OSX during the second and third weeks in November. Overall sales of Windows 7 are projected to oversell both OSX and Windows Vista next year.
Windows 7 has been hyped by some as a challenger to OSX's sleek interface. According to Dan Nystedt on Computerworld, Windows 7 has had a very positive launch and is regaining ground slightly lost in the past several months to OSX and other operating systems.
Different versions of Windows 7 have been released by Microsoft. There is even a version for Netbooks. Windows 7 has many new features including a more streamlined interface, faster file access, new graphics standards, and even sticky notes.
However, not all stories about Windows 7 and its launch have been rosy. Some users have problems installing the new OS while others have problems keeping it stable non compliant hardware components. While the new OS is received much praise, it is not a hot item that people are running out to purchase new computers for. Steve Hamm writes that many people are simply buying PCs that need replacement models that happen to come with Windows 7.
As with other operating systems, exploits and security flaws have been found in Windows 7. Hackers have found a way to bypass its activation system. Software hacks can be downloaded to install Windows 7 without activating it. However, security flaws and hacking of the Windows activation schemes are not unexpected and has occurred with each previous release of Windows.
Overall Windows 7 presents a more stable, efficient operating system at its launch than Vista did several years ago. It is more flexible on hardware requirements and will run on older computers. It appears to that Microsoft may have learned a few lessons from Vista's problematic launch.
