Known for laptops and desktops, Dell launched a new portable PC labeled Inspiron Zion HD. The device appears to be a direct competitor to Apple's Mini Mac. However, the comparison ends there. The new unit comes a variety of different colors and can run Windows 7 along with a blu ray drive.
The Inspiron is a desktop PC inside a very small form factor case. It comes w with AMD dual core processors and ATI graphics along with numerous upgrade options including a terabyte hard drive option, 8 gigabytes of memory, and a blu ray drive. A fully featured Inpsiron with these upgrades will run well past $900. However, the unit starts out at $229 with less powerful features.
The base model that sells for $229 comes with a 250 gigabyte hard drive, a 1.6 Ghz Athlon 2 processor, Vista Home basic, ATI HD3200 graphics, 2GB ram, and a DVD drive. No monitor is included but can be added to the package. Higher level versions are available with more ram and increase hard drive sizes. One can also upgrade to higher speed AMD processors. A full listing of upgrades can be found on Dell's website.
Only time will tell how successful the unit is. To say it competes with the Mac Mini is a half truth. It also competes with many media players flooding the market, some of which come with hard drives and remote controls. Unlike traditional media PCs, the Inpsiron Zion HD is easily transported and can be turned into different appliances based on one's wishes. It can serve as a full scale computer complete with monitor and keyboard, act as a stand alone media player, or even become a low end game player machine. However, one might need more powerful components to play the latest PC games.
