Since the beginning of e-sports, Starcraft has been the primary leader. It is the dominating and driving force behind the e-spots industry. Due to this, whenever e-sports is mentioned only two potential things come to mind; Starcraft or MLG (Major League Gaming). However, now new competition has arrived on the scene to contest Starcraft’s domination over the industry, Gears of War 3.
For over 10 years, Starcraft has been reshaping the e-sports industry and determining the path with the highest profits and highest entertainment value. It has pushed the entertainment limits of what was once thought possible for any video game. Now, as more games are jumping on the coat tails of Starcraft, a new challenger has arisen to contest Starcraft for that top position, and it isn’t even in stores yet. Gears of War 3 is, at this point, has the potential to not only out hype Starcraft 2 but to also outsell. Starcraft currently holds the record for the most sales of any video game on any platform in 24 hours. Now that Gears of War 3 made its biggest debut at E3 it is geared up to go to war with Starcraft 2 for being the biggest game in the industry.
The Gears of War series has already established itself in the industry and it is already a game played at the professional level. While South Korea may not change their views on Starcraft 2, the global community may shift more towards their favorite horror shooter. This rapid shift could create a tidal wave, cascading down on both Starcraft 2’s popularity and notoriety. Gears of War 3 could change e-sports and competitive and professional gaming entirely. At this point there is only speculation but with how popular Gears of War 3 is already becoming, there may be a new horizon just over the mountain for e-sports.
