Free in DC: Top 5 free Memorial Day performances in DC

PBS' National Memorial Day Concert: PBS sponsors a free concert on the West Lawn of the capitol. The concert will include The National Symphony Orchestra, a variety of musical guest from Joe Mantegna and Dianne Wiest to Katharine McPhee will attend, and a host of military musical performances. The music will also be speckled with documentaries and tributes. The performance is Sunday, May 24 at 8:00 pm. Don't worry if you can't make it out to the West Lawn for the show it will also be broadcast live (see your local listings).

National Memorial Day Parade: This annual parade is presented by the American Veterans Center. It includes nearly 200 separate displays, including active military units, veterans groups from all 50 states featuring veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Operations Enduring Freedom. The parade will also feature a variety of youth groups, floats and marching bands. The show begins Monday, May 25 at 2:00 pm and proceeds from Constitution Ave and 7th Street to 17th Street.

Wolf Trap Foundation Summer Blast Off: The performance art park kicks off its season with a free show by concert bands. The gates open at 6:30 pm on Sunday, may 24th, the show begins at 8:00 pm and is followed by a fireworks display at 9:30pm. Space at the show is limited and though the performance is free they will close the gates once they reach capacity. Therefore, if you plan to attend this show make sure you are there early.

Memorial Day Jazz Festival: This festival of musical performances showcases big band, swing, and contemporary jazz music. The concert features amphitheater seating and a new band every hour. The performance goes from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, May 25th at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria VA. In case of inclement weather, the festival will be relocated to the Lee Center’s Kauffman Auditorium, 1108 Jefferson St.

Arlington National Cemetery: Memorial Day a flag will be placed in front of each of the Cemetery's headstones. The Cemetery honors fallen solders with a wreath laying and flag ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at 11:00 am. This ceremony will be followed by a concert at the Memorial Amphitheater.
