September festivals in Wisconsin a great getaway

As the summer turns to autumn many people in the Chicago area love to travel to Wisconsin to enjoy the fall colors and fresh air to the north. There are a number of great September festivals in Wisconsin that make a terrific overnight destination for enjoyment of a unique community event and the beauty of the trees as the leaves  change colors

Wisconsin hosts a number of festivals that celebrate the fall harvest, the heritage of original settlers and Native American Indians. Fall festivals include the Wilhelm Tell Festival in New Glarus, Indian Summer Pow Wow in Milwaukee, Laura Ingalls Wilder Days in Pepin, the Wine and Harvest Fest in Cedarburg, Cranfest in Warren, Cranberry Colorama in Manitowish Waters and Cornish Festival in Mineral Point.

Willhelm Tell Festival and Schuetzen Fest, New Glarus Labor Day Weekend

New Glarus, southwest of Madison, is a great destination for an ethnic style getaway. The New Glarus Labor Day weekend tradition has been charming visitors since 1938. The Swiss ethnic style festival features a live theater presentation of the legend of Willhelm Tell in English and German. There are festival events during the entire Labor Day Weekend including a Childrens' Lantern parade, yodeling concert, Swiss camping,. Schuetzen Fest is a shooting competition on Monday.

Milwaukee, WI: Indian Summer is celebrated on the Milwaukee lake front of Lake Michigan at Henry Maier Festival Park, also called  the Summerfest Grounds. The weekend event features authentic Pow Wow, fireworks, five stages of entertainment, Traditions Passed On, Indian Summer Village with a recreation of traditional dwellings, Circle of Friends Art and traditional Indian and American foods. Laura Ingalls Wilder Days, Pepin, WI. September 12-13, 2008

Pepin is the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the writer who detailed life on the frontier Hand made willow baskets at Laura Ingalls Wilder Days in Pepin photo by Christine Nyholmin the popular book series Little House on the Prairie. This two day festival recreates a day in the late 1800's ans the settlers and pioneers of Wisconsin gather for a community event. There is an authentic trading area with artisans demonstrating the arts and crafts of the 1800's. Events include music, Laura Ingalls Wilder lookalike contest and Old Tyme Fiddler's content. Wine and Harvest Festival. Cedarburg, WI. September 19-20, 2009

The 37th Annual Wine and Harvest Festival  in Cedarburg is sweet way to spend an end of summer weekend. Highlights include festival food booths, Cedar Creek winery booths, the Marketplace, Live Music, Scarecrow Contest, the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Show, the Rods N Relics Car Club Show, Henry's Kids Korner, Pumpkin Paining, the Arts on the Avenue art show and more.

Warrens Cranberry Festival. Warren, WI. September 25-27, 2009

The September issue of Oprah Magazine calls Cranfest “Worth the Trip!” The World's Cranfest in Warren harvesting the cranberries photo courtesy CranfestLargest Cranberry Festival attracts more that 100,000 people every year to celebrate the State Fruit of Wisconsin. Popular event features souvenirs and craft items from local vendors. good fun, contests, and more. On Friday and Saturday Cranberry marsh tours educate visitors about the cranberry industry.
