Winter is not far off, but there is still plenty of local fresh produce available at the "Ypsilanti Winter Seasonal Farmers' Market."The Ypsilanti Winter Seasonal Farmers' Market combines local produce with holiday themed items. The market has been held in the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti for two Tuesdays this November - November 10th and 24th. There are two more dates left this year for the market - December 8th and 22nd.
The winter farmers' market is run by Growing Hope, the same organization which runs the Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers' Market.
"I am very impressed with the turnout and variety of produce," said Ryan Stedman, the new farmers' market manager for Growing Hope. "I want people to know there is plenty of fresh local produce available [at the Winter Seasonal Farmers' Market]," she continued.
To help aid in preparing for an old-fashioned holiday, there are chestnuts, grass-fed meats, locally-bake pies and breads, maple syrup, colored squash, painted goards, and other holiday items.
Stedman encourages parents to make the trip to the market, in December, a family afair by taking their children with them for a fun opportunity to learn more about where their food comes from. In addition to meeting farmers, shoppers will also get to meet a cheesemaker from Zingerman's Creamery to answer their cheese questions.
Zingerman's cheeses are all handmade. They offer special cheese appetizers inspired by a couple of regions in Italy, and other varieties of goat's and cow's milk cheeses. They sell both aged and fresh cheeses.
For the children there is a special "Kids' Corner," run by Ofra Duchin, a graduate human nutrition student at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. To find out more about her booth and the other offerings of the winter farmers' market, check out the photo gallery below.
