IPod music in college student's ears
From the age-old walkman and the somewhat circulating Cd-player to the present day Apple IPod and MP3 player, listening to music has been one of the most popular individual and group activities in many college settings. Ever since Apple’s introduction and launch of the original IPod on October 23, 2001, the world of portable music has never been the same. Since 2001, Apple has introduced an array of new and improved MP3 players, some of which include: the IPod shuffle, IPod Nano, IPod Touch, and all new IPhone 4 which plays MP3’s as well. All over the country (and world) are people listening to their favorite tunes, radio stations, or podcasts, and one of the biggest groups being college students.
On almost any college or university campus you visit, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, you are bound to see at least one student, but probably more like ten to one hundred, with a set of headphones resting on their head or in their ears. Attached to those headphones is an MP3 player, loaded with tens, hundreds, or even thousands of different songs, videos, or digital clips. Where do these songs come from? One of the most popular MP3 players is the iPod and iPod music can be purchased online and downloaded directly to your computer, laptop, and even most handheld devices and smart-phones with wireless capabilities. There are many different providers of online MP3 downloads, one of which is the Apple iTunes Store, which holds over 6 million individual songs as well as movies, TV shows, Podcasts, Apps, iTunesU (university lectures and discussions), and audiobooks. In addition to the iTunes store, other popular MP3 download providers include: Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Napster.
Where do students find all of this iPod music?
If an individual were to look for music in other places than the web, they would go to their local record store and purchase a CD. Many people buy CDs for several reasons. In addition to obtaining a physical copy of the album itself, many stores allow you to listen to the entire album (as opposed to online providers who offer only samples of songs). Some popular music stores in and around the Bay Area are: Amoeba Music (the world’s largest independently owned record store), Rasputin Music, and Streetlight Records. Another perk about shopping locally is the fact that at many of these record stores, you can buy and sell used records and other items in addition to new ones.
After one has purchased the songs they desire (whether online or locally), the process of transferring the music from your computer – or in some cases your CD to your computer – to your MP3 player is a relatively simple and straightforward process. There are usually programs and software that come with purchasing an MP3 player, such as iTunes for Apple IPod and SonicStage for Sony MP3 players. These programs allow you to not only upload your music from your computer’s hard drive or CD-Rom drive, but also create, edit, and delete customized playlists, song titles, and much more.
