As we are nearly in September, Bay Area college students are already counting the number of holidays in this upcoming academic calendar and preparing for each one. A popular social holiday that many of these students partake in is Halloween. Now, Halloween might not be a traditional “holiday,” schools are still in sessions, banks are still open, and the mail is still delivered, however students celebrate this event every year. Being a college student in the San Francisco enables students to express themselves in ways that other parts of the country would be unheard of.
What do college students do every Halloween?
Without a doubt, most students dress up for Halloween. Halloween costumes are worn just about anywhere during this time of year. It’s not uncommon for students to show up to work, class, parties, or even walking down the street with their costumes on display.
Here are some activities college students will be doing come October:
- Stocking up on candy. Almost every college student uses this holiday as a reason to splurge on candy! Whether it is to stock up for the occasional trick-or-treater, for their class, or for their desk at home, college students take advantage of all the candy deals and snacks available and stock up for when those sugar rushes are needed.
- Shopping online for Halloween costumes. There are so many choices this year that students are going to have to think hard about. Most students look in their closets for those easy to modify articles of clothing. Some students go to the local Salvation Army to shop for their costume. One costume that is guaranteed to be popular is Lady Gaga. A student can simply take a boa from the Salvation Army and wrap it around their head. But if students truly want a showstopper, then shopping online early will guarantee them a cheap price and a better selection of Halloween costumes.
- Event planning. When Halloween hits, you better believe that college students are making plans regardless of what day of the week it falls on. Some college towns like in Isla Vista, where UCSB is located, have a display of costumes worn by students held in open. Although, scenes like this sometimes open themselves to trouble from visiting spectators from other campuses, it’s an event that is a yearly tradition.
- Work as usual. Not all students celebrate this holiday the same. There are those dedicated students that, regardless of the event, day, or celebration, they hold steady to their courses and stay in at night to study. Not enough students place school as number one as these students do, but an occasional break can help with the balance of college courses.
As Halloween approaches, start your research early and figure out what you want to be this Halloween. There will be the vast advertisements for candy, costumes, and decorations coming up shortly.
