Since its inception at Howard University (Washington, DC) in 1914, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is clearly a steady influence and presence in regards to community uplift. Its more renowned members such as Atlanta general contractor giant Herman J. Russell, noted scientist George Washington Carver, actor Blair Underwood, and everyone’s favorite weather anchor, Al Roker, clearly exemplify their fraternity’s motto of “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity”.

Locally, the members of the Stone Mountain-Decatur Alumni Chapter are living proof of their motto and commitment to serve. With their upcoming roster of social and service events, these men clearly have their heads and their hearts in the right place, which is to provide programs of substance to address the needs of the community in which they serve.

Their upcoming “Blu Thursdayz” mixer series at Barley’s Sport Bar and Lounge (on April 8th) is an opportunity for professionals to network and lay the foundation for multiple business projects and endeavors, and their annual Blue and White Family Picnic (in partnership with local chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.) provide a fun, festive, family based environment to continue to strengthen the bonds within the community.

However, their inaugural Field of Dreams charity adult softball event is a clear example of their creativity in serving the community. The event takes place on August 7th at Rehoboth Recreation Fields in Tucker, GA. With a $25 per person registration fee, all teams are not only competing against each other to see who comes out on top in the softball games, but assisting the chapter in making sure the community comes out on top.

All proceeds support two key ongoing chapter programs. In addition to supporting the March of Dimes and its research, the chapter’s James Weldon Johnson Scholarship Program is able to generate funding in order to provide scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors.

One of their members, Franklin Mitchell, notes this is “a great way to support two causes while having a great time with family and friends”.

Clearly, the service they are providing is a great way to enrich the lives of those in the Stone Mountain and Decatur communities.
