Commercial Real Estate and Social Media

The social media site LinkedIn lends itself naturally to commercial real estate. Its platform allows industry professionals to make their profile, client list, professional accomplishments and contact information - not to mention professional recommendations - readily available to potential clients.

But what about facebook? Now that facebook allows for vanity URLs, is there an untapped market for placing professional profiles - or building profiles - on facebook? My guess is yes, but I haven't seen it ... yet.

But I am seeing more commercial real estate professionals on twitter, and two articles today discuss this topic.

Jonathan Ahron, Senior Managing Director of Charles Dunn Co., a commercial real estate firm serving the West Coast, pens a nice article on his introduction to the professional capabilities of twitter for Commercial Property Executive in an article that can be found by clicking here. As Ahron says in his introductory paragraph, this form of communication is becoming a necessity in business.

On the other side of the coast, Stefan Frey, a Principal at Commonwealth Commercial Advisors, Inc. in Medford, MA, says he can't have a conversation with another business owner without them asking what he's doing with social media and whether it's working. His blog post can be read by clicking here.

From my perspective, as a commercial real estate editor, I've made the decision -- based exclusively on the only-so-many-hours-in-the-day rule -- to use my twitter account (twitter.com/JayRickey) as a source for providing links to commercial real estate-related articles pertinent in the Mid-Atlantic, whether I write them or not. I then aggregate those articles with my own and send them in a daily email delivered everyday at 7:00 a.m. Here's a copy of today's edition, and here's how you sign up.

My facebook page is almost exclusively personal. My LinkedIn page is there, but I don't use it to its full capability.

Again, only so many hours in a day.

Jay Rickey is Editor and Publisher of citybiz real estate, an online commercial real estate news service delivered daily via email. He can be found on twitter at twitter.com/JayRickey and contacted at jay at citybizlist dot com.

Jonathan Ahron has a suspect moral compass. He and some partners opened a business on Larchmont Blvd in the Wilshire District. They clearly and intentionally violated the local zoning ordinance and law. Their disrespect for the neighborhood even has the local councilperson upset at the group. Do not trust this guy.
