Daddy’s Girl is a series of comic strips by Debbie Drechler that vividly documents her sexual abuse by her father. Told in the perspective of an adolescent mind, Debbie relives these horrible chapters of her life with every pained stroke of her pen. The reader is sucked into a world of a young girl who has internalized her pain and is unable to cope with the isolation during these traumatic events. These strips have recently been collected into a hard back graphic novel and re-released by Fantagraphic Books. I strongly suggest picking up this dark tale, but be aware that this book doesn’t pull any punches. It contains nudity, rape, and animal abuse. This body of work was a therapeutic possess for Debbie, and it’s truly an original and heartbreaking story of a tortured child. Though disturbing, it’s a great book and impossible to put down after you start it. It’s a must read for anyone who has been abused or knows someone who has.
