SPIDER-MAN REBOOT
With all the Sam Raimi/Sony Pictures Entertainment drama now a thing of the past, we can start looking to the future. The planned franchise reboot has garnered mixed reactions among the fan community. Those that did not like Raimi’s take on the Spider-Man films are jubilant, while those who were fans of the franchise will have to accept this decision and move forward. Sony Pictures certainly is.

Another questionable decision the studio has made is the possibility of making the film 3-D. There is no official word on that, but a lot of speculation has been building since they announced the franchise reboot.

There are a couple of names that are discussed on the subject of director. The biggest one is arguably James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), who had written a script back in 1991, when they were planning on producing a Spider-Man film at the time. Cameron has stated that the only super-hero movie he wants to be involved in is our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’s.

But he is not the apparent front-runner. Recent reports state that two other names are being seriously considered by the studio. The first is Matthew Vaughn, the director for the highly-anticipated and controversial “Kick-Ass” film, due out this April 16th. He was originally slated to direct “Thor” before he opted to go do “Kick-Ass” instead. The other name in contention is not as established as the previous two. But, he is, according to Deadline Hollywood, the heavy favourite to be hired as director for the Spider-Man reboot, Marc Webb. Marc might not be as familiar to people as Cameron or Vaughn are, but he has directed “(500) Days of Summer,” as well as a bunch of music videos. Here is the article on Deadline Hollywood.

The studio is aiming for a summer 2012 release.

THOR
The Kenneth Brannagh film, “Thor,” has begun principal photography. There has been nothing but good news stemming from this movie so far. Even “Iron Man 2” director Jon Favreau tweets about hanging around the set in his off-time from his sequel’s post-production process. He doesn’t hide his excitement, and somewhat a little envy.

In an interview on ScreenRant.com, Joe Gatt talks about how he got cast to play in “Thor” as a secret villain. He talks about already filming scenes with Chris Hemsworth, who is playing the lead as the mighty Norse god. He also mentions Tom Hiddleston, who plays the god of mischief and Thor’s half-brother, Loki. You can read the entire interview here.

Also talking about the movie is Ray Stevenson, who is slated to play the fat and obese Volstagg, one member of the Warriors Three. Ray spoke on the film to About.com during the “Book of Eli” premiere, starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. You can view the video interview on the red carpet here, offered exclusively on the About.com website.. You can tell he is very excited about the movie, as is everyone else involved in the project.

CAPTAIN AMERICA
With all the attention on Spider-Man’s cancellation, Iron Man’s sequel’s release date drawing nearer, and the start of filming on “Thor,” not much is said about another highly-anticipated film, “First Avenger: Captain America.” This film, due out July 22, 2011, a little more than two months after the release of “Thor,” is scheduled to begin filming in June of this year.

Rick Malambri tweeted a few days ago about going to meet with Marvel/Disney for the Captain America role. It seems as though auditions have begun. Expect official announcements to be made in the coming weeks or months.

Director Joe Johnston talks to BoxOffice.com a little about the plans he has for Captain America. With “The Wolfman” done, he shifts his attention to the Marvel Comics icon. He sounds ready for the job and clearly has a direction planned on where he wants to go with the film. It seems as though the film is in good hands. Here is the entire interview.

Marvel Studios has created something special ever since the release of “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” back in 2008. Like in the comics, they are setting up all of these characters for the big and epic team film “The Avengers,” planned for a summer 2012 release. There has rarely, if any, been discouraging reports about any of the films they have worked on or plan on working on. Here’s hoping things continue down that path.

If you're in Montreal and are not familiar with these characters, but would like to read up on them, here is a great list of comic book shops in Montreal, and around Quebec, as well. A lot of these stores also offer mainstream, independent, European, manga, and local comics. You can check out The Master List here.
