FVZA: The Reign of Zombies vs The Vampire Legacy

The instant I discovered comic writer David Hine was writing the "Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency" series for the LA-based publisher Radical, I instantly jumped at reading the issue.

David's incredible detail to history, aligned with his ability to seemlessly weave fact with fiction, results in a page-by-page turning story that's absolutely amazing.

Reading FVZA, the 40+ pages flew until this reviewer realized issue 1 was complete and the only image I remember viewing longer than 5 seconds was the cover. Thus, another round to notice the art with no complaints.

Artistically, the characters pop off each page. What makes the visual aspect incredibly easy to navigate through is the combination of 3-D cells and each page not like it's neighbor.

The detail done by Roy Allan Martinez and the art team is consistent throughout the book with not a tremendous amount of detail to backgounds, facial features and clothing, but just enough to capture emotion without being lost in shadows. It's odd to find cover artists that match the interior art style, and don't undercut the story's delivery. This approach put this book into top rating.

The story takes you through the history of zombies and vampires, their timeline mixing with humans, government strategies of containment and present-day status without dragging on for pages on end. The ciritcal point of breaking in characters and the plot immediately after was right on the nose, allowing for Landra, the main character, to evolve from narrorator to a character you want to learn more of.

Issue 1 is 8 fingers and 2 thumbs up...the wait for Issue 2 matches the feeling of an 8 year old waiting for 9am on Christmas day to wake the parents and open gifts!
